Default Thoughts on painting/powder coating?

Stock rims, I just got the 2014 sport touring 370Z and mines came in silver and I wanted to make them black. Have to many other stuff to buy like exhaust, test pipes etc to worry about spending 2k on new wheels. Is this shun upon? I mean the stock rims technically ray’s so not super broke boy looking I don’t think.

No problem powder coating. When I had my sport wheels, I had them powder coated black.

I'm in California so pricing is probably different but you could be looking at $150 per wheel. Maybe a little more or less.

I live in the Sacramento area i got quoted by 2 shops

So for my wheels the first shop told me 6-800 to repair the curb rash and powder coat the wheels depending if I wanted single or two stage coating (I guess it's depending on the color you want that depends on the stage? )

A shop that my friend used to work at gave me a quote for 500 if it's a color they had in stock and 600 if they had to source it from somewhere else but he said I had hundreds of choices to pick from what was in stock. That was with repairs Included.

I love that I have been learning more about my car and how to modify it but omg I'm about to go broke with all the little things I want to do to it now knowing how easy it is to get stuff modified lmao

This is arguably a great deal if you were to add spacers to make the fitment more ideal. 19x9 front and 19x10 rear are some decent sized johnnies stock. Wrap some nicer tires on there and powder coat them any color your heart desires for around $600-$900 when these wheels are around $850 each brand new...

I've done it both ways. Painted my stock rims myself. With proper prep they lasted 3-4 years before I sold them and bought the Volks. Ran the Volks for 7 years and just recently had them powder coated a custom color. Have only had them about 1 month but no issues so far.

If you like the structure of the stock wheels and just want a change of color, go for it.

Here in Dallas the shop I used charges $130 a wheel to remove all curb rash, round out the wheel, fill in any gouges and paint/powdercoat. I've had 4 sets done there now (2 painted for my mazda, 1 powder coated for my girl's audi, and my volks powder coated) and don't notice a big difference between painting vs powdr coating.

The only exception is the metallic finishes. I got truer color with the powder coat. Still a big difference between direct sunlight and shade, but the painted ones looked like completely different colors vs different shades of the same family. Painted a metallic brass looks great in sunlight, but like yellow poop in the shade. Powdercoated metallic looks great in sunlight and like a non metallic version in the shade.
