rear tire for rays 275 or 285
Ok so I know a lot of people jump rear size for the big tire look but I am asking for a strictly performance application and not wanting to throw off the handing which size to choose for street and occasional track. I already ordered some s04 in stock size but have till wed to change mind of rear size to 285. I know the nismo is 285 however it is also 10.5 in wide rim vs 10 on sport rays. 10 sits perfectly in the middle of a 275 fit (9-11) where it is on the narrow side of a 285, 9.5-11. So will tire squirm be an issue in hard turns? also circumference difference of 26.6 vs 26.9 again not much but will it be an issue for pure handling?
Thanks for any input or opinion. |

If it were me, I'd go w/ 295/35 on the rear, 255/40 on the front.
I'm running S04's, 265/35 front & 305/30 on the rear...on Sport Rays...going w/ the above next time circum. dif is only .02" radius 13.0 = same diameter 26.0 = same sidewall 3.5 = same

if you're definitely going w/ a 285/35 on the rear, think about a 255/40 up front
If you're going 245, stick w/ the 275 out back

So you don't feel any sidewall roll going that wide? I worry because they say the s04 already has a softer sidewall than the pss so I don't want some lazy response car I'm just worry about actual tread footprint since I hear some comment the s04 is narrow for its width so don't want to have turn exit traction issues. I also worry about going too tall in the front because when I got the car it had tires that were too tall (I forget actual size) and its effects on the caster on turn in was very noticeable and felt like crap. Also to add the 285 is a sl sidewall while the 245 and 275 are xl. How much stiffer is Bridgestone xl vs sl? Will they be a poor match. Last edited by Jhill; 10-03-2016 at 09:18 PM. |

Thanks I didnand thats wherebit gets really confusing. They list and re measured for me and said the 275 is 9.2" tread whichnis somewhat narrow. Yet they also listnrhe 275 18 and 275 20 as 10" so it really makes no sense. I even had em re measure andndouble check

265/25 Front & 285/35 Rear
I did a lot of thinking and research on this when I bought tires last spring as well (I also have Sport Rays) and ended up going with 265/35 and 285/35 Continental DW tires. I absolutely love this set up. slightly more sidewall bulge and after having them on for 6 months, the way I wish the car came from the get go. Great balance, car definitely doesn't plow anymore and has good turn in. Rule of thumb is the closer to square your F/R section width the more neutral the handling. Regardless of tire make/model, go 265-285/35. You won't regret it.

S04s run narrow. A 285 S04 is about equal to the stock 275 Bridgestone on the rear wheels.

I'm currently running the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's (Rebranded Bridgestone RE-003) in a 255/40 and 275/35 setp. I much prefer how it feels over the old 265/35 and 285/35 setup I had before these.
And I can personally confirm S-04's do run slightly narrow. I would do the 255/275 setup on those as well. |

I do a lot of spirited driving & did a track day on 265/306 S04's...didn't notice any sidewall roll. 1st track day and finished w/ the 2nd fastest time @ Streets of Willow (1:36.5)

the quality of the tire is the most important factor in your case... so either size would be fine and just get the tires that fit your driving needs.

I think this time around imam staying stock as I don't want to induce more understeer. Maybe next year ill look for a second set of wheels with a square 18x10 with 275 all around on r compounds. |
