Default Cracked tire

Hey all,

Earlier this winter, I switched out my OEM tires for a winter set and noticed a huge gash in one of my tires so big that I could see the material under the rubber. The crack is on the portion that contacts the road and not the sidewall.

I've scoured the interwebs and forums for anyone that had the same thing happen but have not been successful. I plan on contacting tirerack.com and perhaps Bridgestone, but I don't expect to be able to use any kind of warranty since I bought the car from a dealer second hand. I also plan on taking it to a local tire store for their opinion.

There's still quite a bit of tread left, so I just want to know if this can be fixed or I'm going to have to buy a new tire.

Thoughts? Jokes?

Looks more like a cut than a crack to me. YMMV

It does look like a cut and it can't be fixed.
It's the cap ply that gives you the high speed rating.

As I suspected, there's nothing I can do to fix the tire, so I have a new $258 tire on order at Firestone MasterCare.

I'm still perplexed at how a cut like this happens though. All of the cuts, cracks, gashes, I've seen are on the sidewall.

ive driven over all sorts of things in my area and yah, ive seen cuts similar to that, just a tad shorter. found a metal bracket of some sort slicing it.

as for cracks, they usually occur at the tread base, and also sidewalls... usually from dry rotting.

Cool, thanks for confirming that I'm not the only one with a cut like this!

Clearly that is a cut. Save yourself the trouble and replace it, your life is worth more than a tire.
