Default 2014 Sport Touring Mod Review

After several months running my recently tuned 2014 Touring Sport (MT) with 2500 miles, I thought I would post a report. Equipment installed includes Fast Intentions exhaust with 18” resonator, Stillen cold-air intakes, 32 core oil cooler, and UpRev chip program (five maps). Work was performed in Chatsworth, CA by Specialty-Z back in March. I have a lot of experience with the Z having owned a 2010 previously and replaced it with the 2014 model after an accident. After months of driving the car still impresses me with the sound, noticeable increase in speed off-the-line, decrease in oil temps even during hard driving in the canyons, and quicker cool down. My 2010 would run ~220 on the highway as the norm while the 2014 now runs around 180 highway and 200-210 with spirited driving. I recently drove to Las Vegas (~260 miles each way) and was astounded with the increased gas mileage with the mods. 16-19 spec but obtained 24 MPG (19 city) and expect an increase as the car breaks in.

The UpRev maps are more interesting than I expected; I have options to go fast, normal, set valet mode (limits speed and RPM), set anti-theft (car just turns over but won’t start if someone has cloned my key), and factory settings. 99% of the time I use the first map which is what I was running when I hit the MPG listed above. Since installing the mods I have received many positive comments about the look of the exhaust and the sound. One thing I would note is that ~4000-4500 RPM’s the resonators create a sound that is a bit high and can be irritating so I either keep the car below 85 (in 6th gear) or above 95. It is not bad between high shifts but the constant whine can grate on the nerves.

Altogether, I am absolutely thrilled with the mods and will likely make more after I hit 5K but in the meantime, I am enjoying my new car with fantastic mods.

Default Tune and mods?

Did you void your dealership warranty with the tunes and mods?

Apologies for the delayed response, I forgot my PW and had to have it reset. According to my dealer my modifications do not impact warranty EXCEPT the chip tune (which I did). To me it was worth it since I trust the tuner. Not sure how much power is added by the chip tune but the car drives much better than before and has noticeably more torque. I have owned a few new cars and found that dealers do not often service under warranty regardless; they attempt to blame "normal wear" thus I never accept their finance deals to cover stuff they would deny coverage for anyway. Hope this helps.

Cool, very helpful as we start too look around for a tuner in the so-cal area that can give a little "bump" to our base ...

I am often told I am too honest; in this case it was two-fold. I think it is only right to advise the dealership in the event I ever went to them for an issue. That said, I will never go to the dealer for maintenance. :-)

Yea not using then for maintenance can hurt more ? You wind up with engine knock or oil consumption you will have issues with them trying to help you get it warrantied. They actually look at your service history never been there except for warranty no dice man no help. Do all your services there and they help you out a ton

I understand your position but based on my experience with dealerships I was paying much more for service using them over equally qualified (or even more qualified) local talent. One example is oil changes, local dealer charges $98 bucks while same service is $50 but with synthetic oil. Further, the local firm does not try to up-charge me for wipers, filters, air-condition system assessment, etc. Everyone should review their risk tolerance which includes warranty issues. For me, it is an easy decision because I know the car and the manufacturer. I trust the vehicle and the quality that went into it.

If the car was a Ford, GM, or Dodge I would buy extended warranty and only allow the dealer to service but that is just me (based on experience). That is why I do not buy their products. :-)

Valencia? I'm here too. Stevenson Ranch actually. We should drive out to Cerritos on the 6th. And yes I did get my tune at Specialty Z.
