track car upgrades
I have recently started tracking my 370z. I enjoy the 370z and have learned a lot and I get faster every session. I have thought about some upgrades like a square wheel setup, an LSD, and maybe some coil overs. But my wife and I are started thinking about having kids. I'm afraid a 2 seater might not work for hauling kids around. And I would hate to sell the car shortly after spend the money on upgrading it.
I was thinking I have 3 options: Keep the Z for track days and daily drive something inexpensive like a focus. pro: I get to drive a familiar car on track con: Seeing the Z everyday and not driving it that often would be frustrating Sell the Z and get a 4 door 335i pro: Nice car to drive everyday con: 335i is a little heavier but many have successfully run them on the track. Sell the Z get something fun like a WRX for daily driving and get an inexpensive miata or BMW e36 or something similar for track days. pro: Something fun for daily driving con: the track car will need some initial work and might be unreliable being an older car. |

Option 3. If you are going to be having kids, you want the DD to be the safe and reliable car. Plus if its it going to be a track car only, I would want to have something I don't mind stripping down...I personally would not want to strip a 370 in good condition

Option 3. Buy a spec miata for z7-9 that's fully sorted and cheaper to run

A Miata on the track, other than a lack of horsepower (solved a bit with some money) is a great car, and will really teach you to drive. I agree with everyone above who recommends that. My view may be tainted...

Definitely keep in mind your financial situation. It's really a big deal when you start talking kids. Also, be aware your free time is going to go down as well, which means less time with the Z and less time being able to work on it, move it around in the garage, etc.
The Z is a spendy track car (tires, gas, insurance, etc), albeit certainly fun. But you can have loads of fun cheaper with a used Miata. Even if it ends up being unreliable, it'll still be cheaper overall. Get your money out of the Z now, if you ever want to. |
