Default Video Rendering with Race Render using Harry's Laptimer Video and Data

This is a track centric post I promise. But only since I use my 370 as the recording transport vehicle. Some of you out there might have an interest in doing the same thing and rendering your videos on a PC instead of the phone. I use Harry's Laptimer and also have a licensed version of RaceRender 64bit.

Ok, I'll admit that I'm not new to the Trackday video recording scene. I regularly use Harry's Laptimer to record my track day runs. The built-in rendering function is adequate but is all consuming of phone CPU cycles. not ideal since this is a phone after all. Any disruption to the render process could send over an hours worth of processing time into the virtual trash can. This is a kick in the teeth when it happens.

I am now learning/trying to use RaceRender to do this function on my PC instead. I have been able to get the raw video and OBDII/GPS data out of Harry's Laptimer and integrate the two using HP tuners RaceRender. The video when complete looks quite good, but the data sync to the video image seems to be off by several seconds.

Have any of you out there tried this method of video production? Any thoughts on the data sync time offset? I really like to have my video and overlay data to line up, so to speak.

I know now you have read the new post and said why not go to Harry's Laptimer and ask the same question? I did already and it did not help. I figured that I might not be alone in this and some of you out there might also be trying this. Just curious.

Any of your video production thoughts are appreciated. Feel free to move this post to another section (DIY??), if you feel the need to do so.

Well here's my first attempt that succeeded using RaceRender to combine the video and data from Harry's Laptimer into a reasonable overlay on the raw video. It is not perfect and more tweaking is required. I'll need to reach out to Harry himself for some answers to a few questions I have on timing.

Enough said, here is the link to the video.

Enjoy.

First impression, please get a better camera mount. Couldn't take the shakiness after about 20 seconds.
Cool that you were able to get the integration to work though.

So A quick update:

1. Yes on the better camera mount. I have gotten hold of a new camera mount with twin suction cups and a shorter clamping arm. Hope this dampens out the vibrations in the phone clamping assembly. I will demo a video from this new mount after this weekends Trackday at MSR Cresson.

2. I have gotten a response from the Harry's Laptimer forum. They suggest using manual timing mode in the app. This lets both the video and the OBDII data stream record at the same time. The key according to them is to start the recording manually when in the Pit or entering the Track. This should enable better sync-up of the data when rendering using Race Render on the PC.

As I said I'll demo a couple videos soon.
