Default POWER STEERING: Relocation's, coolers, know issues and solutions.

Hey Guys/Gals,

So I have seen a few post's/comments about power steering, even more so on cars that seem to see the track. But I have not seen much dialog as far as issues/solutions.

For a relocation, what would you guys like to see? Where would it need to be? Why does it need to be relocated? (As is what issues does it have with current placement?) Also seems like the rack has been a failure point?

Would people like to see a bolt on power steering cooler option? Seem's large wheels and sticky tires cause some rapid boiling on these true or false?

What fluid do people run?

Lets get some power steering talk going and see if we can solve some issues!

Running 315/30-18 Hoosier A7 tires I can boil the fluid in just one autox run even with the cooler Z1 sells. For fluid I'm running Redline D6 synthetic. Biggest issue in my eyes is that except during the run itself, there is no air through the cooler other than from the radiator fans (also true for the engine oil cooler). Would love to see a vendor offer ps coolers and oil coolers with a fan and all the hardware to attach and wire it.

I wonder what endurance teams (like Doran) solutions are? I use RL D6 and it does boil but I haven't lost PS during a 30 minute track session.

So maybe do a "standard kit" for like Road course guys who get enough air flow, but add an "autoX kit" with a cooler and a fan? If it is supplied with all hardware and wiring needed, would wiring it in be an issue for people?

We use all Setrab coolers, and XRP lines and fittings so nothing but the best quality wise.

I run a Setrab Oil cooler with Spal fan on my track cars oil cooler and it works great, its not cheap but 100% worth it.

As for the relocation, why are people moving the reservoirs?

Just from my experience, I've had the PS fluid boil over once, but it was on a 95F track day in Houston. I will most likely get a basic cooler kit to prevent it from happening, but no steering issues to date.

I'm using the Z1 ps cooler with Redline fluid. One thing I found out is not to top off the reservoir. If you do. You'll have a mess on your hands as the fluid expands as it heats up. And I do trackdays.

I've had a Mishimoto Power Steering Reservoir sitting in my garage for over three years now. Too lazy and no tools or experience to fabricate a bracket for it.

I just want a reservoir that looks nice and is easy to install

I've been running Redline ATF Dexron VI in my power steering system for several years now

The reason for relocating the PS reservoir is for cosmetics. Clean up the look of the engine bay.

I have a Mishimoto transmission cooler for the power steering plus not to top off the fluid, and it's been fine ever since.

Sock over the reservoir seems sufficient. Boiling does not seem to be a serious issue. Those that change the reservoir only end up with more issues.

Ok so it seems like most of the issues are fairly easily solved with a simple cooler set up, and an option for a cooler with a fan would be nice and a relocation kit is not "needed" but only for looks for most people.

Off to the drawing board!
