Question High Flow Cats?

Was talking cars with a friend this weekend as I'm looking at getting a 2015 Nismo in a few months, and the topic of upgrades came up. I mentioned that some of the first thing I'd look to do would be a Stillen G3 intake and a Fast Intentions catback and high flow cats.

He told me that you can't mess with the stock cats until the car has 75K miles on it. I did some google searching and it looks like he's right, as far as I can tell.

I'm sure I've seen newer cars with upgraded cats though. Is this just a Texas thing? Is there a way around this? I feel like I'm missing something here. Thanks!

Technically it's illegal to remove working cats. I've never heard anyone having an issue with the feds because of it, though. In TX your car will pass inspection as long as you don't have any CELs so HFCs will be fine.

Hey Chuck, I'm just curious. As far as the legality issue you mention, I would assume that is just Texas law? Seems to me that would be difficult at best to prove. HFC's are 49 state compliant with the only exception state of California.

BTW OP, you don't have to wait for 75K miles in order to install. I would however suggest you wait until your break in is complete. But that's just me, IMO.

Nope, it's federal. The Clean Air act made it illegal to remove a working cat and replace it with something that doesn't do as good of a job as the OEM one.

Don't let that stop you. It's never enforced. It seemed like it was aimed more at the shops taking cats off, not the end user. In TX I passed emissions for years with no cats at all.

I suppose my main concern was whether or not a shop would give me trouble getting it installed in the first place.

Most "regular" shops won't do it so you will have to go to aftermarket performance kind of shop.

But your right there in Arlington close to member "Shovelman", he is probably willing...... I mean he did mine.
Initial Z and MrEous like this.
