^ Thats pretty much how close it is. I can take a cross-section view and show you if you want. The hole is as deep as possible to make sure the knob can sit as low as possible.

Well on my vehicle, there is a metal shaft underneath the plastic piece. You can literally just pull the plastic piece off. But now I see what you saying... I guess they made the white plastic piece...
