Don't know if it helps more but the car was sitting for about a year ungaraged. Could moisture be pulled in somehow? I never changed the fluid since I've gotten the car.

Gotcha, I'll probably get those off. But as for the short block, I don't know how bad it is until I look at it. I caught it pretty early when it initially started the knock but who knows.
