Anyone driven the new (2018) Civic Si?
This past weekend I went to my local Honda dealer to check them out for fun. I've never driven any gen Si before, but I've always heard great things. I really despise the new styling of the civics, but it's not like I was buying the car anyway. However, I have to give credit where it's due...the interior is top notch. Honda has been doing really well with their interior styling lately. Just not sure why they dropped the ball on the exterior styling on all their models (personal opinion).
The salesman was very laid back and he literally just gave me the keys to test drive a sedan lunar silver metallic civic Si along with my cousin. The salesman didn't even join! He said take it out for as long as you like and enjoy the car. I didn't abuse the car, since that's just not me, but it was definitely spirited driving. While cruising around town the car seemed fine. There's plenty of space, it's super practical, and that shifter! Such tight and short throws. All that pretty much dies once you push the car, unfortunately. I had two big problems with the car. The torque steer and rev hang is just unbearable. As soon as you accelerate, the car just veers off the to the right. I understand it's FWD, but it was bad! Once the turbo kicks in it's even worse. Then, when you shift it to the next gear, you just wait...and wait...and wait until the RPMs drop enough to shift smoothly into the next gear. It just completely killed the fun of the car. Overall I was highly disappointed in the car. I'm not really sure why I made this post, but I figured it would be helpful to read if anyone on this forum may be interested. Exterior looks are subjective, the interior and shifter were amazing, but the overall driving experience was terrible. |

I drove an ex girlfriend 2013 model. Believe it or not the shifter was awful. Clutch was vague but the gates were so far apart and loose. Handled ok, nothing to really remember though. Power was anemic, I expected more. Fine enough for commuting but it didn’t install any wishes to push it. Overall not good.

The last great Honda (fwd) was the RSX Type S. Such an impressive machine. I had the last model year, a 2006, and my ex had a 2007 Civic SI, the one that changed everything for the worse, so I had both to compare side by side. The shifter sucked, the clutch was garbage, the suspension turned into a pillow, ugh bad memories lol

my dd was a '12 Si sedan, fun little car - 200hp 174tq, the car was only 2900lbs so it was plenty of pep. Squeezed out 37mpg on a 700mile road trip, constantly averaged low 30mpg in the city, and high 20's if I was flogging it. It was just a great car overall... huge trunk, awesome transmission - everything was functional, tbh it was a sleeper - from a slow roll it went toe to toe vs current gen WRX.
test drove the new Si, its pure garbage in comparison... its probably just as fast but it runs out of steam by 5k rpm (Exactly where the previous gen was just ramping up). the car itself is nice ergonomically but the new 1.5T is nothing to write home about. Its not slow for a DD but the turbo experience is just delivered in a poor fashion. They should've just put the 2.0T from the type R and detuned it to 250hp, everyone would be happy. I guess they were scared no one would want to buy the overpriced autozone special type R on 20" dubs if they offered the same drivetrain. The new accord has the type R drivetrain but its a much larger vehicle, again no help for those who wanted a light/nibmle daily with a nice engine. |
