Gas gauge incorrect.
Has anyone had repairs done to the mechanism that identifies that amount of fuel in the tank?
Ever since I started doing Autocross I've had issues with this and it's not the normal stuff where people fill up and are missing just 1 dot. NOPE! I can fill my tank entirely and it'll show 1/4 tank sometimes, but most times it shows just below 3/4, so I never know how much fuel is in the tank. Last I checked, I can go 300-350 miles on a tank of gas and just recently I topped off the tank and at 220 miles into my trip my gas light came on and said I had 46 miles to go, and then for every mile I drove it took 2 miles off the estimated distance to empty.\ It wouldn't be much of an issue if I didn't have a long trip to NY planned for July. I don't want to take my gas chugging Titan. I'd rather teach the girlfriend how to drive stick and take the Z. Who has had there's fixed, what was the part called, and how much was it? thanks

There are two level sensors in the tank. Search this site (several threads on fuel pumps (one of the level sensors is integrated with the pump) and level sensors on here) and/or download the Factory Service manual (FSM) for more info. I'd check the connectors and wiring going to the sensors first.

Something sounds fishy there to me. So not only is your gas gauge incorrect, but your mileage went to sh&t as well?? I cant see how you only got 220 miles when you average 300-350...... As far as the low fuel light, you cant trust the mileage it shows you, because it changes too frequently (too many variables). To me your long road trip problem is easy. Gas up when the low fuel light comes on, or every 200 miles, whichever comes first.

As southark said there are two sensors and the car averages the two to come out with a final reading. When I did my fuel pump I didnt clip the float level back on completely and it fell off a short while later and floated around in the tank. When that happened because only one of my gauges would read and the other would read empty the fuel gauge would never go up over half.
I would check both floats and make sure that they are reading correctly. It would be an easy check with a ohm meter to see what sort of reistance they were reading for each level. Goodluck Mitch

After installing a larger fuel pump I ran into a BUNCH of issues. My gauge was always off one dot. Whenever I filled my car up gas would come pouring out of the bottom of my car. And then I had an issue where my car would stall around 1/4 tank. You're going to have to physically check the fuel pump assembly. Two main issues to look for would be the float isn't settling in the tank properly (this would cause your readings to be off like they are -problem 1 of mine). And make sure the T fitting is securely pressed into the regulator outlet. VERY IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE THE BLUE O-RING THAT SEALS YOUR FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY TO THE TANK DOES NOT EXPAND OR GET DAMAGED. IF IT DOES NOT SEAL PROPERLY YOU WILL HAVE GAS LEAK OUT OF YOUR CAR UPON FILLING THE TANK....
