Default squeaky top

I have a 2010 with 33k and at i have a good amount of rattle, squeak coming from the top area when either up or down. This is at speeds up to 30mph or so. Smooth roads you dont really hear it but if its gets even a little bumpy...rattle and squeak. Any suggestions.

Hi

When you say it is coming from the top area, do you mean from the rear under the top cover? Or where?
I haven't heard of anyone with such a problem.

so I took a ride and really tried to understand exactly where the sound is coming from and it appears its from under the boot.

That's where I would think it wood be coming from also. That is probably going to be hard to pin down. Nothing has fallen down in there & banging around?

My two guesses are :
1) Two (or more) parts are rubbing together and need to be separated or greased.
2) Something has fallen into that area and is rattling around (see OldGuyFla's comment above).

Either way, you're going to need to remove some covers and do a visual check.

IIRC, there is a service manual for verts that is not part of the FSM download on this site (see link in my sig). But the FSM is a valuable resource, so worth downloading and looking.

Not sure if this will fix your problem, here's a link to a previous thread and what fixed my squeak (post #14)

squeaks and rattles

I think my bumper was totally missing from what I recall.

I had this same issue with my 2010 with 9k miles on it when I bought it last year. I went to home depot (lowes). I got some of those little circle felt thingies that you put on the bottom of furniture, a bottle of Gorilla Glue, and a spray lithium grease can.

I sprayed the lithium sparingly on hinges, springs and other moving parts on operational parts of the soft top. I also grease the pins and fittings that are on the doors, and spots where it meets the windshield frame. I do this every few months.

The felt pieces I glued to the points where the compartment lid closes on top of those rubber mounts and a few on lip of the hatch lid.

99% of my squeaks are now under control.

This was the biggest noise issue I had with my top when I bought the car last year. After multiple trial and error fixes, I found that the left side pin was missing the black plastic cap. So the metal pin head was squeaking (loudly!) on the metal bracket when stowed. It was much louder with the top down since the top up provides some pressure down on that point.

The fix was to put a durable adhesive backed clear plastic piece on top of the pin and an adhesive backed foam/felt piece on the metal bracket. This was last year, and I'm happy to report it lasted about 4,000 miles of driving before the friction wore through the plastic piece and I noticed the noise coming back a couple weeks ago. It took all of 5 minutes to put a fresh piece on and the noise is gone again. Now that I know to check that pin, it's an easy fix if it ever comes back!
