Need your opinion plz (2013 flooded)
Hello,
I found a bran new 2013 for sale. The only damage on the car that it was Flooded (Still don't know if it was fresh or sea water, don't know how high the water went in the car). Should I buy it? If I ended up buying the car. What do I need to do to make sure everything is ok? And how much would it cost me? Thanks

Don't... Flood damage doesn't show up immediately, they show up after a few years after all the wires rot through... And the car won't have a warranty, and it will be difficult to get insurance

Don't walk away from that one ... RUN! As per DE.50, it's a time bomb waiting to go off. It would be bad enough on an old, pre-electronics car, but with all the finicky computers on the Z, you can bet that there will be problems down the road.
If you do decide to buy it, make sure you drain and replace engine/trans/diff fluids before starting/driving. I'd also suggest periodically (~6 month intervals) removing all interior panels and checking for mold.

iv bought flooded cars before at salvage auctions and its hit or miss, with newer cars most electronic conections are sealed, if you turn the ign on and the dash works its likely that the water didnt get to high and you should be ok, since the radio, cluster heater controls arent sealed. i actually bought a truck a few yrs ago for a winter beater and the water was so high it actually pushed all the oil out of the engine, all i did was replace electronics like radio cluster heater controls switches.......drain the water and flush out of the engine rear ends gas tank and tranny and it started up on the same spark plugs once the water was out of the exhaust! hah couldnt believe it.....there are actually alot of 370zs for sale at the salvage auction now that have water damage from hurricane sandy, still has the stickers on the hood and wheels, in some instances a new car lot will just claim everything in there lot wether they are totaled or not its a gamble really

YES! Big Gamble... Seen it first hand from lot damage due to storms. some cars just get the carpet wet and others the water is at the headlights and that would be vedy, vedy, bad for a Z. Ya just wont know....so u just gotta decide if u wanna roll the dice. Mez.

It depends on what you plan to do with the car. If you're gonna gut everything and turn it into a track car, I say go for it. You'll be able to see what needs attention. If it's going to be used as as a daily driver and your only car, you're asking for a lot of expensive headaches down the line. It's not worth the time and effort unless you do a lot of the repairs yourself. Even then, a lot of little things cost an arm and a leg to replace.
Think of it this way, a lot of guys here would like to install the factory navigation system if the Nissan parts weren't insanely priced. I can't imagine having to replace the entire front console, electronics and all.

We bought a flood damaged car for our daughter for college. We could see where the water was in the foot wells...barely covered the floor.
If you can't tell how high it was in teh car

we had 139 cars flooded in the hurricane, and we know the person who bought them, he is spending a fortune trying to get them running, and most run for a few days before more stuff goes wrong. If you buy it, make sure its for nothing!!!!!!

I hydro locked my 2002 Nissan Sentra. Water came up to my arse as I sat there cursing.
Car was paid for, no comprehensive and a winter beater, so I dried/changed/cleaned and kept it. Threw a rod 1k later, main ECU and airbag ECU blew, electronics had unfixable gremlins, fuel door release rusted stuck, filler neck rusted, cap never sealed and threw codes, brakes rusted and seized, the list just keeps going. Ended up limping it for 60k miles past the flood. Trust me - WAS A HUGH MISTAKE AND NOT WORTH IT. Spend a little more and get a car that's right. |
