Anyone carry a fire extinguisher?
My Porsche had a fire extinguisher in a box under the passenger seat. I have seen cars with the familiar red cylinders on A frame pillars and also mounted high between the seats. Is this for looks, like carrying around Magnum condoms you may never use?
The only car fire I ever had was in a 1966 VW Bug that had sat all summer and the hoses dried out. After driving for about 30 seconds I lost all power and fuel was spewing over the engine behind me. So what did I do? I coasted the car into the closest service station. Not one of my better moves. Anyway the melted parts cost about $120 to replace. Never seen a car fire since and that was 1988. Anyone have experienced with car fires, having and mounting extinguishers, or actually using them? |

I've seen cars on fire... But those were Ze German cars... Our Japanese cars aren't that shítty.
If you turbo it and play a lot with the fuel system, sure, I guess you should carry one

i actually have a small 1.5lb first alert fire extinguisher in my car. i keep it behind the passenger seat. the seat is always back far enough that it wont move, so im not worried about it becoming a projectile in a collision.
i originally got it because of my oil cooler. just in case something unhooks itself and catches fire on the track. i also realized, if i saw a car fire happening in its early stages, id try and help put it out with the extinguisher...but who knows if thatd ever happen if it came down to it |

All my cars carry extinguishers - even the Murano driven by SWMBO.
Z34 especially because I cannot go out on the track without it. Extinguisher is replaced every 6 years Used in anger twice in over 40 years, once for Volvo clunker in the 90's (uni student serviced the car, replaced the fuel filter and forgot to re-do the clips) and once recently for a "mint" V12 Jag at a car-club event that suffered the same fate. The Jag owner was especially grateful as he had invested $50K into his restoration (the car was "mint" - just like it had left the factory). I scored a bottle of very expensive Australian Cabernet Sauvignon which only goes to show that good deeds sometimes carry their own rewards .... not that I was looking for it, but mypalate certainly said thanks ... |

I'd use it to extinguish the source of 2nd hand smoke.
I had it in my suburban. It was useless. I ended up putting it in my kitchen. BTW, every car fire I've seen, it was either a VW bug or a VW bus. That got me thinking, it should be a requirement for these cars to have them before they get registered.

halon for sure, but if you cant afford it..just make sure you rinse off the chemicals ASAP. a 2lb halon extinguisher is 1-200 dollars. a basic chemical BC extinguisher is 1/5th the price and corrosive, but a quick rinse SHOULD be good

Halon is awesome. We had a small fire start in an empty fuel tank (fuel residue, marine distillate) from welding being done in an adjacent compartment on a navy ship I was on. The fire sentry gave a quick blast of halon through the manhole into the fuel tank. Wow, put the fire out in just a few seconds.
