Long story short my key spent over an hour in the washing machine as my work clothes soaked. Finally realized what I did and thought my key was definitely destroyed as I pulled it out of elbow deep water Sure enough walked over to the kitchen window pointed it at the car pressed the lock button and the lights went off.
