Default Dealer Oopps....

Flew out to a dealership to buy a 2018 370Z with low miles coming off a lease.

First trip was a 6 hour drive thru the rocky mountains on higher speed twisty highways to get home. Trip was ugly! At anything over 130km/h felt like the front end was floating all over the place and had a few sphincter puckering moments when I could not get the car to balance and track around long sweeping corners and it felt like I was gonna come off the road.

Got home regretting the purchase and took my Scion FRS out for a spin to remember what amazing cornering felt like again before trying to start trouble shooting.

First thing I looked at was the tires and low and behold the Nissan Dealership put new all-season tires on the back, but left the original just-pass-the-safety SUMMER tires on the front. Informed the dealership I was installing new all seasons on the front and they were paying for them :-) Fixed the issue.

I would never have believed the same brand and model of tire, but with a mix of summer and all seasons, would make a car that squirrely at medium speeds. So in case you ever thought about it, don't!

Still think the FRS corners better......but love the torque upgrade all thru the range in the 370Z. FRS was fun to drive but underwhelming in the get up and go category.

Now if there was only somewhere to put both my and my wife's cups of coffee, guess the wife can't have one :-)

The Z is touchy on mismatched tires. You're not the first to experience this.

And welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the 370Z forums. Good eye this is not the first time I heard dealerships trying to pull this. You definitely want to keep a nice set of tires on your Z. When I bought my Z it came with a brand new set of Yokohama tires!

FRS grip limit is noticeably lower than a properly tyred Z. The FRS handling balance is perfect for easily-accessible fun, the Z has gobs and gobs of grip, it's MEATY and just sticks to the road like it's on rails until you get to 85% of the limit and your face starts peeling off in the corners. Then the characteristics change a bit and it starts to dance, you can treat it rough the first 85% and it'll grip and go but the next 15% has to be treated with a lot of respect and finesse. It's a tougher car to master but it's a much better package overall.

If you stick **** tyres on the Z then it'll be underwhelming. Different tyres front and back is just going to ruin everything.

agreed! I have always told people you can totally ruin the feel of a sports car with the wrong tires.
