Drain it to the proper level.

Yeah u dont want too much oil. Drain some of it.
Better to have a little less than too much. I wished I knew why it's bad. I just read about it, but cant remember why I'll be in my bunk!

Too much can sieze the engine. I think its like an inch over the fill line? I could be wrong, by why even take that chance.

It will slow the motor down. It creates windage around the crank. The crank is moving oil out of it's way. Now if you really put too much oil in. You can hydrolock the motor. Seen a kid at a garage put oil into the motor with one of those overhead oil lines. He squeezed the trigger and didn't stop until the oil was coming out of the dip stick tube. Then he tried to start the car and back it out. Thank god it didn't start. We figure he put over 20 quarts of oil in.

The crank hits the oil and turns the oil in the sump into foam. The oil pump then cannot maintain oil pressure and the bearings run dry, you get metal to metal contact between crank and bearings and life quickly turns to cr4p and the engine dies, if you have overfilled the sump to the point where crank/rodbolts hit the surface of the oil.

In my younger and way less knowledgeable days where it was trial and error or you hung around with someone who knew what they were doing, I overfilled my dad's Renault R5 Turbo. Drove it and had no idea until people were honking at me about it blowing so much smoke on the freeway. That's where I learned to read the manual and check the dip stick.
The car was a lemon POS.

Back in my no-knowledge days some incompetent tech put my 350Z's dipstick in the wrong hole. Left Chicago to drive the Natchez Trace and saw 0-5 PSI on the gauge. Kept pouring oil into the engine until I realized the dipstick issue. Put around 6 extra quarts of oil into the pan. Drove the Trace from Nashville to Natchez with smoke billowing out of the Z's hood whenever I stopped.
