Rust in 2017 Engine Bay?
Anyone else experience this issue? I have rust around the strut towers. Both of them. I wash and dry thoroughly, hit 24k miles a week ago. I noticed it this past December when I was wiping down the engine bay, I don't use any products in the engine bay just old microfiber towels after washing the exterior only. Took it to Nissan and the service manager said its definitely covered under warranty and there should be no rust. They sent me to a repair shop to get a quote. The shop took pictures and what not. They also found small rust spots in the door jams. Didn't hear from Nissan for a month so I called and they sent me to Nissan of America and opened a case. Two weeks later NOA rep tells me "unfortunately due to weather conditions your car is not covered under warranty?" In those exact words.
Does this sound right? I do live in Florida and we see rain and humidity quite often. It is a 2017, daily driver, extremely well taken care of, purchased new In November of 2016, she only had a few miles on her. Just trying to understand why would Nissan sell a vehicle prone to rust within 2 years of ownership? Any feedback or options to resolve the rust would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

If you drive your Z in Florida it rains a lot their and moisture and humidity is high their as well so rust is very possible on any vehicle. If Nissan is being unfair about covering it under warranty contact your legal counsel and get advice or take your Z to a reputable paint and body shop you trust in your area. Definitely get the rust removed and repaired from your Z because rust will only grow and get worse over time. Post some pics of the rust if you can.

What kind of rust?
If it's just on the surface (similar to a patina), it's not a big deal. Every car I've owned had some surface rust somewhere; steel frames are covered with it. Sand, prime, and paint if the look bothers you. If it's eating into the metal and/or flaking, you have a problem. Time to call in a professional. Do it soon as the rust will continue to get worse.

I live here in FL and have had my z for about 7 years (3rd owner) and I have no rust anywhere at all, and if it were prone to rust after almost 10 years I think it would have.
Something weird is going on with your car for it to rust that soon. BTW I live in Orlando so I'm not on the beach but take the car there occasionally. I wish you all the best working this out with Nissan. |
