Cold weather tire performance
So proud new owner of a 2017 Nismo Tech (6 speed). I bought as I don't like the mpg my diesel f250 for trips and don't like using the 2016 Z06 out of season or on long trips.
So here is my question. Going north next weekend (if dry and no snow). The temps are to be low around 12 degrees. My ZO6 with summer ultra performance tires turn to ice skates below 45. How will the Potenza S001 deal with the cold pavement? Thanks again and glad to be back in the Z community.

They will probably preform close to the same. Hockey pucks until they get warm. Look at the info at www.tirerack.com to get a better idea.

Those tires would be more like ice skates in that cold of weather good luck. Check out the wheel and tire section of this wonderful forum because you need a wider tire set up more contact patch. In my experience driving the Z in cold weather the Cooper Zeon,Michelin SuperSport, and Michelin Primacy MXM4 did well overall in cold weather. Base your tire selection on what conditions you normally drive your Z in.

My Bridgestone S04s... when the temp would be in the 30s, my Z would slide sideways down my driveway when I cut the wheel. The S001s are the successor to that tire, IIRC? I might be wrong, but I would expect similar results as both are summer tires.
You can deal with the cold if you drive very carefully, but introduce any precipitation in any form with the cold, and you're playing with fire. Grab some Blizzaks. |

Thanks guys, loaded up the F250 as now there is a chance of light snow. Can't deal with the risk though I love driving her.

I believe the nismos use dunlops on the newer ones.
I can honestly say of youre going to drive under 50 you will lose performance. I drove to nj at temps around 35 with re11s front and indy500s in the rear, snow coming down at times and lets just say i was puckered. Your skill will help you but there is a physical limit to what the tire can do in a given temperature. Once it starts hitting tbe 40s mark you should consider parking until the spring. |

So I was curious upon return from up north. The other day 19' here I took the nismo out. She was like a hockey puck. Took out 2 days later 38' and felt much better. That does make a difference. Was safe taking the truck and thanks to all for the advice.
