Default how is new Maxima's VQ engine ??

I heard that the new 8th gen Maxima is equipped with a reformed VQ35DE engine (better than its previous 7th gen had).

Has anyone tried it ? If you did, how is it when compared to 370Z's VQ37VHR engine ?? (based on the stock engines without tuning) Or is it much different in performance than its previous 7th's VQ35DE ?

* Please don't get me wrong. As a Nissan fan, I just am curious about the engine, but have had no chance to try it. I hope there would not be unnecessary troubles.

I just wondered about its enhanced VQ engine. This subject might be proper for Maxima forum though..

It looks like it has a better breathing manifold and sodium coated exhaust valves. Also a long list of safety additives that Nissan probably won't recall. have u read this? sounds promising

Nissan made the tuning values in the 370Z’s engine ecu more aggressive than the Maxima hench making more overall whp and wtq. The sodium coated exhaust valves in the Maxima’s VQ is something inherited from the GTR indeed.

The Maxima engine has instant torque and progresses way more smoothly than the old VQ. Sounds like a luxury car engine with grunt. All that said. The CVT murders all the enhancement with droney fake gear changes in sport mode and an ongoing hum in all other modes.

So basically. The CVT murdered yet another good car. Why Subaru and Nissan are doing this to performance cars is beyond me. Go Nissan!!!

As far As I know... it has a direct ignition system. Not direct injection.

As a happy owner of a 2017 Maxima, I can attest to the following:

1- the VQ35DE engine is one of the best sounding and smoothest V6’s I’ve ever experienced. It was the number one reason I chose a Maxima over any other sedan. Having test driven quite a few, I found the Maxima had the most powerful and responsive engine without direct injection (which I did not want).

2- The new generation Nissan CVT is absolutely perfect. Forget everything you know about CVT’s. This one is extremely responsive and will simulate 9 speeds in sport mode. It will almost redline at every shift if driven aggressively. The car does go 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds. That is better than most sedans in its class. So no, the CVT does not hold the engine back at all.

So far, this car has turned out to be the best DD I’ve ever owned.

Yes my «*POS*» is FWD. I would’ve definitely preferred that it wasn’t but hey, I can live with it especially in my local climate.

What «*POS*» do you drive (asking nicely of course)?

I’m really jaded about maxima’s. Broke 3rd gear 3 times before I lost my cool with it on my 97 5speed back in high school. I wasted a bunch of money on that thing but it was fun. Had stillen light weight flywheel, stillen short throw shifter, act clutch, unorthodox light weight under driven crank pulley, place racing cold air intake, stillen front strut tower bar, stillen rear anti away bar, brembo brakes and a bunch of other crap I can’t even remember. That was 20 years ago, time flys. After that I’ve never owned a front wheel drive car. Rear or awd is it now.

Currently driving a 17 grand Cherokee limited. Wish I could have kept the z but I came down on drill sergeant orders. Wasn’t about to off road the z and needed something I could sleep in comfortably.

I mean... you say some things from the enthusiast standpoint, it's a deterrent from making a Maxima a daily. Some people want an extension of a sports car in their family car. CVT almost hitting redline? Lol

From my experience, that 9 speed simulation is a lil less mushy than the old maxima/Altima transmission, but still feels very much simulated. Nissan really thought by using active sound cancellation to aid in simulating gear shifts, would help people believe it's better. But when your passion is cars. You hear all the fake shyt being pumped easily.

I'm not saying the Maxima is a bad overall car. I'm saying that CVT IS a horrible sacrifice for the enthusiast. Very hard to live with past a couple months.
