Default Tire shipping cost outrageous, please help

Hey guys,

I finally got my tires sold only to find out that UPS wanted 70$ per tire and Fedex wanted 50$ each. Upon researching many forums, the consensus seemed to be 25-35$ per tire. This is shipping them as is and just slapping a label on them unboxed. Wrapping them together doesn't help in cost. Shipping from Chicago to Florida 245/35/18 tires x2. Any thoughts?

Thank you

sounds like UR
not using Tirerack for purchases, they have some cheap rates
some tiredealers give slightly better prices but gouge U on shipping to make up the profit.

Check with Greyhound. You will have to drop them off and buyer will have to pick up at the bus station, but may save money. I bought a hood for my 65 pickup from a guy in CA and hs shipped it to me cross country to SC for around $130.

Wait, you shipping to Hawaii? I paid $60 per tire to cross the Pacific with Tirerack.

Shipping as an individual and shipping through a business are two totally different situations.
I worked for a printing company that shipped massive amounts of stuff. They get HUGE discounts. I was able to use their UPS account and shipped two wheels for about $45 bucks for three day shipping. Indiana to New York.

As a contrast, I tried to individually ship an oversized 15 pound package with UPS and they wanted to charge me $170. Considering I sold the part for $150, I didn't do that. Greyhound was $50 something.

UPS has now gone to dimensional weight, which will kill you in situations like this with large items. Basically, they figure that a certain dimension package should weigh XX pounds. If it weighs less than that, you still pay for XX pounds. So like a box of feathers and a box of rocks could cost you the same amount if they're in the same size package. It's no longer just about the weight.

But as others have said, Negotiated Rate is a huge savings. I think I pay about 40% of Published Rate.

HERE is a good guide to shipping wheels and tires.

You can get a better rate using NEX, but be aware of handling fees. I shipped a set of four 18" wheels with tires from Indiana to New York for $156. That included pick up at my house and residential delivery. I packaged them as shown in the link above and they were delivered without any issue. But be aware of extra handling charges they tend to charge you a month later at $9 a wheel. I packed as shown, but didn't then put each wheel in a box after I covered with cardboard and was charged $36 handling fees.

Additional Handling applies to the following:

• Any article that is encased in an outside shipping container made of metal, wood, luggage or shipments not encased in cardboards.
Any cylindrical item, such as a barrel, drum, pail, or tire, that is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container
• Any package with the longest side exceeding 60 inches or its second-longest side exceeding 30 inches
• Any package with an actual weight greater than 70 pounds
• Each package in a shipment where the average weight per package is greater than 70 pounds and the weight for each package is not specified on the source document or the NEX automated shipping system used

Do you really save that much money by buying tires online instead of just getting them from a shop and having them installed there?

I sold the tires to a forum member, I didn't buy them. I'll try shipnex and suck up the handling fees for not boxing them. I can't imagine they would charge me a fortune for that.

Have you tried USPS? That's how I've always shipped wheels and tires for ~$35 apiece. I have used Standard or Parcel Post in the past, but I think it's called USPS Retail Ground or something now.

In my case, no Oahu Michelin dealer had the MPSS rears for the Z. Tireack was a little less than Costco on the fronts but with shipping, no.
