Default Back again with another stupid question

Hi everyone, today I have a question about insurance claiming. I have no idea how to clearly ask this so please stay with me.

We're talking about deductible and 2 way insurance. Ive never had an accident that was my fault, knock on wood. Anyways it comes down to a hit and run scenario.

I always believed if something happens to your car, assuming u have 2 way insurance, pay deductable and wake up to a car that was in the condition it was before the accident.

Now I heard rumors somewhere that you can ask your insurance to measure the damage, take the check for that estimate, not pay a deductible and go get your car repaired somewhere else you like for cheaper and pocket the differwnce.

Is this real/legal or is it a rumor and i should ?

Thanks.

I usually have to pay the comp deductible for hit and run while parked.

You do need to get an estimate from an adjuster in order to officially file the claim.

Yeah thats what i grew up understandjng but my cousin recently told me he did this and everything was fine. He got 2 way insurance. Estimated 900. Took the insurance check. Fixed car at local reputable body shop for 400. Pocket the rest. Didnt pay a dime for deductible.

It is my understanding that you can make a claim and the insurance company will pay you what the adjuster(s) estimate the repairs will be (minus deductible). The insurance company will cut you a check for that amount and it is up to you what the money is spent on - repairs, liquor, exhaust mods, whatever you want. If the cost of repairs exceeds the claim payment, it may be difficult to get the overage paid for. YMMV

You are still paying the deductible. The insurance company just subtracts it from the claim payment.

My favorite body shop is on my insurer's preferred list so I let them handle all the details. I just pay the deductible when I pick up the car. Edit: I do have to request that they use factory parts or the insurance company will try to use after-market parts.

This is all true but something else to consider is that, if during the repair the shop finds more hidden damage, it might be tougher to get any more from the insurance company. Especially if you're not using an approved repair shop.

Any settlement check the insurance company gives you will have the deductible deducted. Just because you take a cash settlement over them paying a repair shop doesn't release you of paying the deductible.

I have uninsured motorists coverage included in my policy that does not require paying a deductible. If someone hits me and runs and I file a police report, I can get the incident covered under the same and not have to pay my deductible. Otherwise, yes, as mentioned, your deductible will be deducted from the final check.

Thanks everyone. Not to sound like a smart *** but this is exactly the way i thought it was in the begining. Like no way insurance would pay u check like that without takinf deductible out first. man having you gUys are the best.

For those interested, it was a dent in my rear bumper. just the one piece needs tk be repaired. So if everythinf is correct, maybe claim insurance on new rear bumper amd use check to get amuse rear bumper?

For my claim (Window and dent) I left it at the shop, adjuster came and negotiated with the shop. The shop then writes up a tab and the adjuster signs off. At which point after service has been delivered I pay my comp deductible and then walk away.

The insurance company pays the shop directly
