Default New Tanabe axle back for Nismo!!!

...well sort of.

So two weeks ago I was helping a friend out and installing a Tanabe axle back exhaust on his 2011 G37S Coupe (Tanabe #T70132A). When we dropped the muffler it all looked WAY too familiar so I scooted over to the Nismo and had a look underneath and wouldn't ya know it all looked the same. We finished the install and went for the test ride in the G and I was in love with the sound.

Many searches later and i found a post on here with a G37 stock muffler on a base 370 and the tips stuck out about 2 inches too far. I started measuring and sure enough the tips on the G muffler were about 1 inch longer than the Nismo. I searched all over and couldn't find anyone who had tried this install. Knowing that the Nismo rear valance is longer than base I decided to give it a shot. I always wanted the Tanabe sound but I just don't like how their Z exhaust has the cross flow mufflers. Straight (angled) cans just seem like they would flow a whole lot better in my poor memory of fluid dynamics. Plus it is a Y-pipe design and i want to add the AAM Comp mid pipe when I'm done so I want a nice axle back muffler set.

I gave Ken @ Enjuku Racing a call (not affiliated...just giving a good shop a plug) and he beat the best price I found anywhere and got it sent right over. So i got to tearing down tonight while i waited for UPS.

... pics attached.

Needless to say I am very happy. Only "issue" is that you have to remove one little bracket on the drivers side that offsets the muffler hanger near the subframe. The G doesn't use this bracket and you bolt the rubber hanger to where you unbolt the bracket. (see pic #15)

The tips are about 1.5" longer but sit nice and flush with the back lower edge of the bumper. Tips are 115mm compared to Nismo 120mm. Piping ID is 58mm which is exactly the same as stock.
  • Louder than the G by a little due to the more open H-Pipe design.
  • Nice pops and gargles on rev match downshifts.
  • Just a bit more aggressive tone than the G...not quite as tuned. Again this is probably the H-pipe vs Y-pipe.

Overall I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Would be 10 out of 10 if the tips were a touch shorter. I would not recommend this for base / sport / touring rear bumpers. Ground clearance is much better than most diagonal can mufflers i have seen.

Next step is AAM Comp Midpipe.

I hope you enjoyed.

A cross between aggressive and toned. A friend who used to work in ALMS told me it sounds like a 911... (Shrugs)

That actually sounds really good. I wouldn't worry too much about the H-pipe to Y-pipe differences. I am also interested in what it would sound like in the higher rpm range and with some aggressive downshifts.

Bringing this thread back to life because I used to have a G and loved this exhaust. I own a 2013 Nismo now and the stock sound is well..does not exist. This is my next purchase...dont want to do the cat back systems...just want more noise and this is perfect....wondering the difference between the Top Speed and the Tanabe? They look exactly the same except one is 300 and the other around 700.

Sorry to Necro and hijack but, I have come across a conundrum and this is possible a viable solution for me. I am currently running AAM resonated HFC's, AAM Mid-pipe,AAM Y-pipe and AAM short tails. This setup is tremendously loud and just wayyyyy to much noise for my preference. The sound is raw and unrefined at higher RPMs. Anyone have an opinion on wheather a set of these G37 Tanabe axel backs would be enough to tame my exhaust sound?

sounds like you need to toss your setup and get a complete Fast Intention system with 18 inch resonators

Mine is barely noticable at 3k RPM, then after that becomes a growl
