Default Hatch interference when full open, latch issues when full closed

Hey guys,
The title says it all:

I have hatch interference when full open, latch issues when full closed.

More specifically, it feels like the struts are "rubbing", maybe on their own internals when I close from full open... and sometimes, I have to press the unlock nipple twice to open the hatch because the latch doesn't fully release the first time.

My car is a 2012 Nismo. Anybody else have similar issues? I would hope this is covered by warranty, as I only have 12k miles and my car is in perfect condition.

I've seen this issue several times on this forum.
some members had rattling and loose hatch issue and they fixed to tighten the latch caused it to intermittently not open the hatch on the first button press.
I believe there are adjustments you can make for this, and other members could chime in.
you can find a lot of posts similar to issue your having

Also, for the first question, I started having this problem yesterday on my nismo.
from fully open state, when I try to close the hatch, I hear some rubbing sound, more like plastics crackling together. I suspected its a pneumatic hatch struts making that noise, but it also sounded like it was coming directly from the spoiler area where the break lights are... which didn't really make sense to me, and trying to figure it out

I did a search and saw some people having issues, but none seemed exactly like this... at least not the combination of the two. I'm going to take it in to the dealership when I get a free moment and I'll report back on what they find.

As another note, my problem is oddly intermittent - both from the fully open state to the latched and not releasing properly issue... neither one happens all the time; just every few times I open it.

did you purchase the nismo brand new or used?
how many miles have you done yet? any rear-ended accidents or rear bumper been taken off before?

New, only about 13k, and no accidents or bumper removal.

It's gotta be a design flaw; just a little maddening to have issues w/ a $40k+ car after such a short time and so few miles.

It's more than likely covered by warranty.

I would take it in, and have it or them replaced.

Try this:
DIY: Weight reduction/Fix hatch not opening issue

As for the sound, maybe lube up the struts, or get them changed under warranty

Unhappy

If I don't have my hand lifting up on the hatch when I hit the release button. It won't open sometimes. I've put washers in the black plastic spring cans on the hatch to help. Some have used pennies.

No. But think I might do that as a winter project. I put some washers in the spring cans. That works for about 90% of the time. About the only time it doesn't work is when I have my hands full of something.

Ridiculous that we have to do this stuff for normal functionality!

I've got an appointment for next Saturday to get it checked out; I'll let y'all know the results... but ****, if I can save weight with your DIY, might look into that afterward... projects are beginning to mount though.

This is my first priority (for my Seattle-mandated 4WD, ugh):

For those interested, I got this hatch issue fixed. First, they replaced the latch... the problem was still there.

They asked me if it only happened when I hadn't opened the hatch in a while (maybe half a day or more). That was the case... so they replaced the hatch struts and the problem is gone.
