Default G owner, future Z owner

2011 G37 IPL owner here but looking to buy a 370Z in the next year or two. Plans to turbo/twin turbo it. Figured I'd start gathering some info and decide on the best year to get. Its a beautiful car with so many options to make it unique. Looking forward to doing some learning here. But for those of you who love the G also, here is mine.

That IPL is CLEAN. I looked into it as well before deciding on my Z (glad I did).

Hmm...it really depends on what you want in terms of trim level and possibly even color as some colors were only offered in certain years. For the most part, the Z is a dinosaur and not much has changed. If you're looking for a Nismo, I would suggest 15+ as you get the Recaro seats, updated wing and body kit, and optional tech package which you may or may not like. On the other hand, you lose the gunmetal gray color option and older Nismo wheels. I personally like the older Nismo wheels and the gunmetal gray color, but the Recaro seats and tech package were more important to me. Both body kits and spoilers are appealing to me, so I was indifferent. As for non Nismo models, I don't think you can go wrong as long as you get what you are looking for, especially if you are considering to modify it - things like wheels, seats, motor, and color won't matter I assume if you already have plans. I believe the base model does not come with the S-Mode which is the synchro-rev match for the manual transmission. The only real note I can make is that Nissan upgraded the clutch system in their 2018 models. I can't speak for the upgrade as I've never tried it, but the clutch system in the 17 and older models are trash...just trust me and the forum on that. Again, if you are planning on upgrading mechanical components like that on your Z then it doesn't matter. Other than that, I would probably say the same as anyone else would - find a well maintained Z in your budget.

Curious to know why you are switching cars? Good luck.

Save some money and wait for the 400z. The 370z old body will be obsolete by then

This is a fair statement, although I don't think anyone knows what the final stats, looks, or release are for the 400Z (and if it will be called that). Plus, OP, not sure what your budget is and if you're looking for new or used. It's obvious the new Z will be more expensive and may help the already shitty resale value for the Z. Unfortunately your IPL will probably not fetch that much. Plus side to all this is you have time on your hands.

Obsolete? I prefer to think it will be "classic".

Much like the second gen 300, I think the 370's design will be somewhat timeless and always a beautiful car to look at.

Why not turbo the G?

If the "400Z" comes out and it's everything us loyalists want, that's great, but there's no way I'm giving up my baby. I'm hoping the next Z will be everything we want it to be so I know what my next car is lol

Base model is not an option for me, would rather have the BBK at the start. The Nismos are beautiful, the pearl white especially and I actually like the newer rims better. The hard part for me would be not getting the gray, lol. My wife's truck, my work car and my G are all some version of gray. I definitely have some research to do but if I come across a good deal on a Nismo then I may jump on it if the time is right. I will have to look into the newer clutch to see what people are saying. Since I will most likely drive it a bit to enjoy it prior to any turbo plans (just in case I blow it up once turbo'd....funny...not funny) I would like to get the best setup upfront and then just make changes as I go the turbo route.

I love my G, I have no intentions of getting rid of it. Its more of a cruise around ride. Few bolt ons, tune and a killer sound system. So its reliable. The Z will be abused so in any downtime I can still enjoy my G. Besides what I could get for it selling it is not worth it to me. Too much time and effort invested.

Thought about it but there is so much information already out there on our motor. Plus I am completely comfortable doing most things to this current 370Z/G37 setup. Not to mention I have all intentions of driving the hell out of it so used is the better option so if/when its sitting waiting for new parts, motor or whatever, i'm not still paying some $600+ a month note. That said when the 400 drops if it is impressive enough then who knows!

I would have to agree with classic! Why not turbo the G...…….automatic So much more to have to worry about. And I want the thrill of a manual again.
I toyed with the idea of going SC with a conservative tune. Maybe after I see what the Topgunz SC will do but i have always wanted a turbo car so......time will tell but for now i learn.

With resell values being really bad for this car - as weird as it sounds - i'm considering making the Z the daily driver and finding something like a used GTR (pipe dream at the moment) or looking at turbo route - and finding a 'fun' inexpensive daily (preferably a hatchback) so if the Z is in parts - no biggie haha

I love the GTR. My only issue is having driven other awd cars i just find rwd are more fun to drive. I like feeling the car. I would definitely get a GTR so long as i could still have a fun rwd. But getting the GTR modded how i would want would put me living in a cardboard box! So its Gs and Zs for me.

Haha - no i get it - While I would love to get a GTR - its just hard to justify the cost of one and the maintenance is also pretty high when it comes to brakes and rotors. Overall, I think my ideal would be to PIF the Z and keep it - then get a nice fun daily like a Honda CTR - then look to save and boost the Z. Probably not really smart either since both of the cars named are kinda the same (unless you boost the Z) so why have 2 similar performing cars vs getting one really really nice ‘near exotic’ in a GTR. Oh well - right now I just don’t want to have car payments for a few years etc.
