Default My Black-cherry Build

After finally getting my "dream" car last year, I told myself that it's an already awesome car and I won't spend any more money modifying it.

Didn't last too long, as the drivetrain is currently separated from the chassis (Feb 2017) and i haven't had the car for a full year yet.

I've been researching for a few months now about an affordable way to make the car just a bit faster to compete against modern sports cars, and finally decided to try using R35 GTR turbos this winter. Having stored the car back in October, there wasn't a better time to try this project as I have no need for it in the winter.

Basic information about the car:

Bought April of 2016, 2012 370Z Touring W/sport with 39k miles. Stored it in October with 49k miles so I drove it a lot...

Within a month of owning the car, I bought an axleback from eBay just because i hated how the car sounded stock. I kept searching the classifieds and scored a brand new Stillen Gen 3's for a good price locally so i got it and installed it (3 months in). I went to the Milan Dragstrip back in August, 2016 for an import event and it got me hooked on more power. I ran 13.2x at 105mph with intakes and axleback (90F day with 80% humidity)

I do everything DIY as i'm a full-time student and can't afford what shops charge, and have even replaced 2 engines on previous cars I've owned with my father inside our garage.

After researching about the kit for months, I decided to go ahead with the project if I can get the turbos for a decent price. I talked to a GTR owner and he helped me out by selling both turbos with 20K miles on them for $550 shipped.

I kept talking to a lot of Z shops and everybody turned the idea down and told me it's not possible and would cost me more than if i had just bought a TT kit. So I decided to prove them wrong

When i first got the car:

Cleaned up the engine bay a bit:

Will be adding more pictures soon.

Subbed... really excited to see what you are able to do with the GTR turbos and manifolds.

Thanks for the support guys, I can't wait to see how the turbos respond either! This is how the turbo is currently, been buying fittings for the oil feed/oil return and coolant fittings and measuring the lines.

I was wondering if anybody is able to confirm that my coolant routing will work. I'm thinking of deleting the OEM oil cooler and using those lines for the turbos.

So driver side will get coolant from the top oil cooler feed, then the coolant exiting will go to the metal lines that originally went to the cooler, then a hose from that line will go to the passenger side turbo. The exit from that turbo will go back into the OEM cooler return line. Hope that makes sense.

Can't confirm, but I think it should be fine... But wouldn't apply to an '09-'11 car as I don't believe they even have the metal nipples that supply the coolant for the '12+ oil cooler.. just a thought since in your other thread discusses the possibility of making a kit.

Just as easy - my Gamma kit just tee's the heater hoses on each side. with a crossover line that runs from the coolant outlet of one turbo to the inlet of the other. Makes a very simple loop.

Default My Black-cherry Build

A small update. Received my turbo fittings for the inlet and outlets, now just trying to find a 3/8 NPT (Z1's oil pan size) to a 5/8 barbed hose fitting. I was going to use the original GTR turbo outlet but decided against it as it was too small (3/8 size hose)

Received my Z1 oil pan spacer. For my limited budget, it looked like a good quality product and was the cheapest one for sale.

Unfortunately, I found a clearance item on Z1 for some APS O2 housings and thought that it wont hurt to try and see if they fit the GTR turbos.

Clearance items aren't returnable so I'm out of a hundred that could of been used for something else :/ Lesson learned.

After a lot of machining at a local machine/CNC shop, I finally got the motor mount bracket design finalized. Made out of Aluminum and very strong. Had to do a lot of changes to the right side of it to make the turbo inlet fit.

Also got the GTR injectors installed today! I was hoping to also do a return fuel system but they're too pricey unless someone knows a way to DIY the return fuel system

My OEM injectors are for sale if anybody is interested.

Finalized motor mount bracket to clear the turbo inlet piping

You'll have an easier time finding a 3/8 NPT - 8an fitting, which is the same OD as a 5/8 barb.

Thank you for the idea, I had it on the back of my mind but wanted to simplify it and use 1 fitting but that didn't work out.

I got a 3/8 npt to -10 AN fitting and then a 45 degree -10 push lock fitting. (Fits 5/8 hoses)

Right now I'm in the process of installing the oil pan spacer and the turbo oil return lines. Just trying to find a good way to clean both mating surfaces without damaging them.

I used a scraper on my block and then cleaned up the last bit with some sand paper. There are probably better ways!

Finally got all the oil return figured out and the oil pan installed! Waiting for the shop to finish the new design of the adapters so I can install everything next weekend hopefully.

Almost done wrapping the manifolds!

Question for anybody who knows if this is good as a coolant fitting instead of using a banjo bolt?
The GT-R coolant banjo bolt is m12x1.25
