Interesting conversation with a fellow driver...
Took my car for a drive on my lunch break, headed back to work minding my own business in the far right lane of a 3 lane road, going the posted speed limit (55 mph.) Silverado in the far left lane decides he is in a rush and needs to cross all lanes at once, right in front of me, and slow down to 40mph. No biggie, had plently of space to go around him, and didnt have to turn off cruise control or hit the brakes. Just went around and headed to work.
4 minutes after I park, same truck pulls up. An older gentleman of about 60 or so decides to tell me that I needed to learn how to drive, because he clearly had the right of way, and I was to yield to him. He also didn't understand why I was so upset about it (in re: to me going around, I suppose. Not 100% clear on that part.) I try to explain to him that, when I'm in my own lane with no yield sign on a normal road with 3 lanes, I don't yield to the guy 2 lanes over, just because he feels like he needs to be in front of me (never figured out why he cut across 2 lanes, there was nothing for him to turn to.) This fell on deaf ears and I eventually just walked away. People seem to be forgetting the rules of the road. But maybe something about a sports car brings it out in people moreso than usual. While minding my business, typically with cruise control set, I haven't been flipped off/honked at/cut off/followed to work(!!)/avoided wrecks this much in my life, and I've only had my Z a few months. Is this part of the Z experience, or should I just move far, far away from this crazy town? |

Reason with that geezer must have been frustrating. Personally for him to come to me ( you ) and attempt to educate you would have made my blood boil. Hopefully he didn't harm your car after you walked off.

Limey I park directly on front of my window at work (taking up two spots like a d**khead, I might add). No vandalism. The topic of our conversation notwithstanding, he seemd otherwise reasonably level-headed. It was an odd situation, to say the least.
Zoren's cliffnotes; Old guy follows (young?) guy/me to work to school him on the rules of the road because, clearly, you are supposed to yield when a madman crosses 3 lanes at once and hits his brakes in front of you with no clear reasoning. |

Correct. As I understand it, the driver changing lanes should determine whether lane changing is possible/safe, signal accordingly, and then change lanes.
I believe it is also technically a moving violation to cross multiple lanes at once, even if signalling. Yielding in this case is entirely a matter of courtesy. If you would have needed to slow down substantially or change lanes yourself to avoid him, you are certainly not at all obliged to allow the other car to pass. Speeding up to prevent the driver from lane change (while staying within the speed limit) would be kind of discourteous, but also well within your right, at least to the best of my knowledge -- you do not have to "allow" a driver to change lanes if they otherwise could not do so. It is the other drier's responsibility to determine if changing lanes can be done safely or not. If I am understanding the situation correctly: Sounds like he just plowed across a bunch of lanes both illegally and discourteously. Even worse if he failed to signal for each change. Following all that with telling you that you need to learn the "rules of the road" is like icing on the cake... If it's any consolation, in FL its common to have someone not signal, cut you off, almost causing an accident, then if you honk the horn to warn (or in fury, which technically you are not supposed to do...), the other driver, as likely as not, will give you the finger and scream out the window. How dare you be outraged at someone who almost killed you with absolutely no concern for anyone else on the road except him/herself. Hey, that person has got places to go, so screw everyone else, right? The driving norms here are like something out of Mad Max

Jordo, while I will give the guy credit for turning on his blinker while in the middle of changing lanes, you pretty much hit it on the head.
To add insult to injury, as im slowing down to take a left on my way home, the guy behind me who was distracted by his phone or passenger or the effort it takes to breathe, almost plowed into my bumper, hit his brakes and swerved around my car as he honked and cussed me out.... I don't understand people. |
