He got unlucky. That's unfortunate. It also depends who and where he got it from and if there was service records.
The previous owner obviously abused the car

How to own/buy a German car 101:

Be the first owner and purchase the extended warranty

Be the third owner and purchase a used car that’s had all the stuff fixed maintained by second owner


DO NOT BE THE SECOND OWNER.

German car life hack: if you want to own a nice German sports car/sedan and keep it out of warranty, purchase an Audi that shares its platform with Volkswagen, premium German car with pedestrian car part/labor prices.

Depends on much miles it has and how hard it was driven by the first and second owner
