A friend of mine recently installed an above-ground pool (IIRC, 6000 gallon). The pool came with a floating ball that slowly dissolves chlorine tablets to kill bacteria and other critters. This doesn't sound like it would control the Cl levels very well. Does this type of system actually work or is there a better way? What's your take on the non-chlorine products (eg, Baquacil)? Can you suggest a link(s) to a good "swimming pool chemistry" page? TIA

I'm with you, not sure how well that's gonna work. It doesn't seem like you have any control over the amount it's leaching into the water. As far as non-chlorine products, our pool is bromine which is a lot easier on your skin, hair, eyes and fabrics plus it really has no chemical smell like chlorine. Bromine is more stable than chlorine in warmer temperatures and it continues to work even after it combines with contaminants, so it sanitizes for a longer period of time than chlorine.

Chlorine and bromine are not compatible, so they'd have to drain the water and start from scratch if they decide to switch and it is a little more expensive than chlorine

Any idea why that is? Both being halogens and right next to each other on the periodic table, I would have guessed that they would be compatible. Just curious.

I got real curious about the Br/Cl incompatibility and did some research. Apparently, the main problem is that Chlorine is more reactive than Bromine and will replace the Br in the salts (primarily NaBr and CaBr) in a "brominated" pool.

I think I understand what I read but maybe not since it seems to me that NaCl and CaCl ionize in water and it shouldn't make much difference which salt is present.
