Default What is "bottle" beneath intake duct on passenger side?

Edit: Oops. Bottle is on driver's side. No corresponding part on the passenger side.

I've been preparing to insulate my intake ducts and filter boxes and have found a part that I can't identify. There is a small black plastic, odd-shaped "bottle" hanging underneath the intake duct near the throttle body. Clamped to a port molded in the duct. Only port in the bottle goes to the duct - no other inlet/outlet.

I can't find anything in the FSMs. EM-27 shows the filter boxes and ducts, but not the bottle. EM-27 also shows resonators on the filter boxes, which are not on my '09 Touring and not on the spares I bought, so maybe Nissan moved the resonator.

Two numbers on the bottle. "JK20D" is molded into the plastic and "80923" is in white paint nearby. A search for "Nissan JK20D" only found some kind of pulley. "Nissan 80923" finds Nissan dealers in Colorado.

Anybody know what this part is/does?

You are probably referring to the Intake Resonators...or whatever you want to refer them as. All intakes eliminate these. You can probably find a suitable plug to delete it if you want. Just make sure it seals properly.

Are you referring to the little part on the underside of the Intake Tube. It is partially visible in the FAST parts breakdown. The reason you cannot find it most likely is due to the fact that Nissan does not list them separately.

That's it. At 10 o'clock position form the label "16577FA". Thanks.

Not looking to get rid of it, just curious what it is.

The intake tumor is there to silence intake noise and to (theoretically) increase efficiency.

Quote:
How the Resonator can improve Volumetric Efficiency

-In an IC engine, air or the air-fuel mixture is sucked inside the cylinder while the piston is moving toward bottom dead centre (BDC).

-As the filling process progresses, the charge air gains more and more momentum, so the speed of the charge air increases gradually.

-As soon as the piston reaches BDC, suddenly the inlet valve closes. But, the air in the intake manifold still has a substantial amount of velocity (or dynamic pressure).

-Eventually, the flowing charge air hits the closed valve, and the pressure of the charge air at the vicinity of the valve increases. The pressure wave bounces back and starts moving toward the opposite direction.

-If a resonator is attached with the inlet manifold, then it will act like a spring to the just-created pressure wave.

-The frequency of the resonator determines the speed at which the pressure wave will proceed again toward the inlet valve.

-If the frequency of the resonator and the speed of the engine (which determines the interval between the opening and closing of the inlet valve) are properly tuned, the pressure wave will hit the inlet valve again at the time when the inlet valve is open. This phenomenon will cause a rush of charge air into the cylinder. The charge air will be forced into the cylinder, causing the increase in volumetric efficiency.

-The point to be noted here is that you will get maximum benefits of increased volumetric efficiency only if the engine running frequency and the resonator frequency are properly tuned. That means you can get maximum benefit only for a particular engine operating speed with a fixed frequency resonator.

-For selecting a resonator, the engine operating speed, intake manifold design, and volume of the intake manifold need to be considered. Roughly, the resonator frequency is kept around double the engine frequency in order to get the benefit of the volumetric efficiency increment.

I'm looking at the one at the 10 o:clock position. Think you are looking at the one at the 5 o:clock position. And that would be what you are describing.

Thanks, folks. Lots of good info. Thank, Mandingo, for the theory.

Too bad there is not one on the right side duct. Since the resonator is not really necessary, the hole in the duct would make a great port for inserting a thermocouple. Might end up using the left side for the t/c, but, since the ECM only looks at the bank 1 sensor, I would prefer to use that side.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I’ve been having a hell of a time trying to finding this part. Mine is cracked, and I was looking to replace it but I read in here that it’s no longer needed with a CAI? I’ve been attempting to narrow down a vacuum leak and was hoping these cracked pieces were the culprit.

You could go to your local junkyard that hopefully has a 370Z and can get it from there provided it's still functional.

Thanks, I figure that and eBay are my best options. Any idea if I still need them though if I have Stillen cold air intake installed?

Not sure if the G37 resonance boxes are the same, but I might be able to source ones from a g37 at my local pull a part.
