Default Axle-back and O2 sensors

Good day, everyone.

New z owner here planning to get an aftermarket axle back, making the Z finally sound beefy thus. Not wanting to do a full cat-back due to warranty and budget.

Few questions.

1. Is there any axle back that you recommend?

2. Would opting for a muffler delete instead be advisable (I know it'd be much louder, but I'm referring to performance issues)?

3. If I do change the stock muffler, will the O2 sensor go crazy with the fact that the system and the escape velocity of the gases are slightly faster, and thus will warning lights come on? Would I need to either "deceive" the sensor or get a remap for a new oxygen fuel mix (which I won't, given the warranty)?

I would suppose that an axle-back mod would be of rather minute effect to performance (which I dont care about, I just want better sound) that the ECU and sensor could easily compensate and have no troubles whatsoever regarding ratios and sensors, but I have no idea. Anyone here with experience regarding that?

4. Finally, kind of relating to the previous question... would there be a loss of low end torque with the mod (or any other sort of performance loss or issue) - as I'm sure we have all read about albeit with no real conclusion?

Thank you, kindly

Hope you all be having a great day.

Firstly, welcome to the forum!

The simple answer to questions 3 and 4 is NO. Axlebacks will not affect O2 sensors or power.

Axleback recommendations depend on what type of sound you looking for. If you want slightly louder than stock with no drone, I highly recommend AAM Performance S-Line muffler. If you want louder and a very unique sound, the Meisterschaft is probably the top axleback to buy but it is extremely expensive.

Muffler deletes known as short tails are extremely loud and you will have a lot of drone coming into the cabin. If you’re ok with that then go for it. There is no big difference in sound between different brands but the fit and finish may vary. Probably the most popular are the AAM resonated short tails. Remark also makes a pretty good short tail axleback (v1).

Cheers! Good to be here.

Wow, that was rather quick and clear and very useful.
Now I can look for an axle back without worries.

Thank you and much appreciated!

Hi,

1. Top Speed Pro 1\Beluga\J2\Manzo axle back exhaust. Google them. They are kind of known as "ebay" exhausts, but they are popular and a lot of people run them on Zs and Gs as you can see from your Google and YouTube results. They're all pretty much the same, and will run between $200-$300. Personally I think they are the best bang for buck in terms of axle back exhausts. It really opens up the VQ sound. Just keep in mind they are really meant for the Nismo which means the tips stick out a little further than non-Nismo models. This is purely a cosmetic thing. Otherwise the fit should be fine. The AAM short tails are another option which come in resonated and non-resonated options. I've heard these run pretty loud and they are a bit more expensive, but they are of higher quality and are produced by a reputable company. Exhaust notes are completely subjective, and people either love or hate them. Some people have reported bad drone, others have no issue. Just things to keep in mind.
2. I would advise against a muffler delete as I think a resonator is necessary to tame the rasp. Personally it just doesn't sound as...classy?
3/4. No, you should not see any issues due to this mod. Some people may argue this, but an axle back exhaust or muffler delete will not provide any noticeable performance gains or loss. It's purely sound as you mentioned.

Good luck! Sounds like you want what I wanted and the axle back exhaust made me very happy - especially when I start it every morning

Welcome to the forum!

I think the previous responses cover the best options available. I'm just curious though, you said you don't want to do a full CBE because of possible warranty issues, but you're willing to do short tails or an axle back. Why do you feel one is safer then the other on reference to the warranty? For any mod to cause warranty issues, a problem has to result because of the mod. So if you have an electrical issue, they can't blame your aftermarket CBE.

I understand being on a budget, but there are some very affordable CBEs out there.

I will review those options, as well. Thanks for the input.
I do believe muffler delete is too loud and too raspy... which at times sounds good, but I daily drive the 370, so I'm not sure I could handle that daily. The VQ does have a very nice tone to it, so it is a shame the stock muffler is so quiet.
Engine tone and noise are one of the better and more enjoyable qualities of any car.

I quite appreciate your time to reply!

Thank you.

Thanks for the welcome, Spartan!

Yeah, I live in a country where the consumer is not quite well protected against corporate whims. In theory you are completely correct. However, you can't even change the air filter yourself here without risking warranty void. You must take it to the dealership and have them do it.
I already previously called and said an axle back would be alright with the warranty so long as they install it.
So in practice I prefer to be cautious.
