H Pipe, Y Pipe or X Pipe
Hey everyone, Im looking at purchasing the AAM 3" true dual exhaust for my Z. It has good HP gains, and the sound I'm looking for compared to FI, Borla or other exhausts.
But looking at the 3" exhaust system they sell, it comes with an H pipe setup. So my question is, what is the better setup for the Z and why? |

the "H" pipe is just a brace between the 2 sides. it's a true dual so there is no crossover.
also, you really dont need 3" unless you're boosted. too big will lower back pressure and slightly lose hp and tq. and in my honest opinion, i'd go with the FI exhaust over any others for the Z.

x2 for the H-pipe. X and Y configurations will both scream more than a H also. In terms of power, you’ll make more with a Y-pipe. They’re also cheaper, look at ISR, SOHO or Greddy. The argument for X is better aesthetic and subjectively better sound.
A lot of people will recommend Fast Intentions. They’ll argue great quality, customer service and sound, but you’ll pay $1,200 minimum and wait several months. The Invidia systems are both great X-pipe alternatives for a fraction of the price and they are also great quality. There are also systems like the Greddy EVO GT or Motordyne which utilize kind of a hybrid X/Y.

An H-pipe does connect both left and right banks together. Y pipes make less power. An X-pipe is the best option and has the highest increase in power. Fast Intentions is one of the best. I wouldn't buy anything from AAM.

The only way an Y pipe makes more power is that then it goes from 2 pipes into 1. The single pipe has to be a much larger diameter then the other 2.

They'll all be close to each other.
Typically the idea is X pipes give more peak horsepower, and h pipes give more low-mid range. Honestly you're debating over single digit differences. H pipes have more of a low rumble to them, and x pipes are a little more trumpety. Again, barely a difference. Last edited by CRiZO; 12-11-2018 at 07:57 PM. |

I don't know what's going on here but an H pipe is more then just a brace. Anyway.
Any well designed exhaust will flow good enough to not make a practical difference. A good Y pipe (Tomei); X pipe (FI); H pipe (AAM) will all do a good enough job. The only design that is inherently worse is a dual independent setup because there is no crossover to assist in flow. Y pipe designs often get looked down on because car manufactures can get the biggest cost savings out of them, only one pipe to mount. https://www.americanmuscle.com/musta...s-x-pipes.html

I have an FI non-resonated 2.5 exhaust I can let you have for cheap after my TT install is done. I am going 3 in. It does have a few issues. One can has a dent in the back due to highway trash and the mid-pipe has a small bend causing the passenger side to be off. Drop me a PM. I am local to you.

Exhaust on this forum is very subjective as everyone likes something else. You will never actually feel the difference between the H Pipe/Y Pipe/X Pipe you would be talking about 5-10 whp-wtq at most. You would be better off choosing your exhaust based on what you think sounds good on your Z? I had the AAM 3” true dual exhaust set up before on my old Z and I really liked it. It fit like a glove and quality was excellent. Also my experience with the AAM customer service has always been great to each their own. Listen to some exhaust set ups on other people’s Z’s and listen to exhaust sound clips online that would be the best advice.
