Default How legal are aftermarket exhaust in California?

I'm specifically looking at the AAM SLine Short Tails. Really digging how amazing it sounds and it looks like it won't be hard for me to install myself.

What I'm scared of is will California PDs pull me over or will I pass smog?

I've passed smog this year already.

If this has been asked sorry, I just recently bought a 09 Touring 370Z with only about 21k miles for a out the door price of 20k.

I also have the AAM Short Tails non resonated and I do agree they sound amazing just for being an axle back! Personally depending on which part of California you live in, even a non resonated option should be ok. I believe you will pass smog because it's only modifying the axle back.

I'm located in SoCal around LA, and I haven't had any troubles with the PDs, yet...

Welcome exhaust is very subjective as specially on this forum as everyone likes something else. I think the AAM S Line Short Tail exhaust is one of the best sounding exhausts for the Z. The AAM S Line Short Tail exhaust also has great fitment and quality as I have installed five of the AAM S Line Short Tail exhaust kits. Depending on how you drive your Z will determine if you get pulled over or not. What is the db level law for exhaust for motor vehicles in California is what you need to find out if there is? Technically in the state of California it is against the law to remove a functioning OEM catalytic converter/s on a motor vehicle. You will pass your smog test with the AAM S Line Short Tail exhaust.

I'm also in SoCal, around the SGV area, so you passed smog and everything with it on?

A friend of mine told me it got lowered to 95db or something around there. And yes the Short tails sounds very good for the amount of work I need to do.

I just purchased mine last Thursday. AAM resonated versions with titanium tips. They haven't updated me on ship tracking and no reply from them. How long did it take to get yours?

Ive had a straight piped s13 hatch back in the day with ISR blast pipes and never gotten pulled over. I even lived right next to the Fountain Valley police department. I drove like a granny though but its worth not getting a ticket

Any exhaust modifications after the catalytic converters will not affect your smog compliance.

However, you will be at risk for noise citations if you modify or remove your mufflers. How much risk, just depends on where you live and drive. Most major city law enforcement and the CHP could care less; however, small town law enforcement and sheriffs may feel differently.

Live in Covina, I don't even have the front plates mounted cause it didn't come with a front plate mount. Haven't been pulled over yet, and I live 2 streets down the Covina PD.

Drove around the SGV area with no problems, think I'm going to put in my order for the Short Tails next pay check.

If you ever have to ask about it don't do it. You'll end up being so paranoid and not enjoy your mods.
