Heat soak???

Is heat soak a real thing? I've been reading around so much I don't know what to believe lol I want to get K&N short ram intake because I found

Default Heat soak???

Is heat soak a real thing? I've been reading around so much I don't know what to believe lol I want to get K&N short ram intake because I found a good deal on them. But I've been reading that that you lose power on the hot days. Then I read that the heat will have no effect on them because the piping for the intakes are aluminum.

Does anyone have K&N intakes, if so, can you tell me how your ride feels in the summer.

This is my daily so I am not racing it or putting it on the track.

You want to pull a nice cold charge of air because it is more dense. If you have an intake that pulls directly from the engine bay the air will be hot. Take a look at where your stock intakes pull air from on your car. You will notice that the air is being pulled from the wheel well area, not directly from the engine bay.

I haven't really looked at the K&N intake so I'm not sure where that kit pulls air. The Z1 cold air intake just came out and there is a Black Friday/Cyber Monday special running. The plumbing for the CAI puts the filters out in front of the car so you get a nice cold charge.

As for heat soak issues... you know plastic heat soaks too. You are kinda screwed either way.

Don't get a short ram. You don't want an intake that pulls air from the engine compartment. Either get an intake with the filters out of the engine bay or get drop-in filters and silicone maf hoses.

Many people buy the the short ram intakes because they don't have to take the bumper off to sevice the filters. Also, long tube cai will make better horsepower because of where the intakes are located as they receive more and cooler air. As far heat soak goes, most all performance engines suffer from it on hot days or during extreme use. The impact of heat soak is not limited to your cai, but includes the rise in temperature in all fluids with in your engine's systems. If it gets extreme, your car will go into limp mode to protect its self from catastrophic failure.

Any many intakes can go for a year or longer without needing to be changed or re-charged which means once a year while doing an oil change just throw in taking the bumper off.

I actually tested a short ram intake before/after dyno and lost 2HP when the engine was hot when we installed the short ram, it just pulls in hot air.

Lol, I don't disagree at all but there those that don't want the hassle. I'm not the most mechanically inclined person but after I did it once...it's a pieces of cake. The other excuse I have read why people don't do long tubes is they don't want to modify the engine bay.

thanks for all the info!

I actually bought post MAF tubes last night. I just wanted to make sure that it was the right decision and I guess it was I just wanted a better throttle response on my Z because I removed my muffler and feels like I lost low end torque because of it. I not sure if this is going to make a difference, but I am saving up for my FI CBE now.

Get a set of drop-in K&N filters and you're done with the intake. You're 95% of the way to the gains of a CAI.

Yup, that is what I did before getting boost. I was around 312 at the rear tire with all my bolt ons.
