Custom muffler deletes?
Cant exhaust shops create a similiar product to aam short tails? Any idea what it would run? I try to call around and they always say bring the car in and good spots are always 30 mins away and im in the prime of my work week.
I want a 5 inch opening or close to that for the nismo bumper. Aam run about 450-500. I feel like a shop can make one half that price. Any experiences? |

cheap...drives a 40K plus vehicle and don't want to spend 500 bucks.
Now in a serious note... I don't think they (most muffler shops) have the quality materials, quality welders and the skills to make something nice, clean and neat. Now if you want something far from neat, clean, symmetrical and so on then any "butcher shop" will gladly make one for you. From previous experiences, any muffler shop in town is not capable of doing it at least with the amount of care and detail that our vehicles deserve. Unless you want something like this: bad repair1.jpg badrepair2.jpg

That's an ignorant statement. Not all exhaust shops provide hack jobs.
The best bet is to find local auto enthusiasts and ask for their opinions which shop does the best work. Usually a hot rod-type shop is the best, but their work, while exemplary, usually is not cheap. You may find that the AAM short tails are a cheaper alternative since the price for a pair of good exhaust tips are ridiculous nowadays. I've been entertaining the idea of using a pair of short straight-through stainless steel mufflers to tone down the noises. Unfortunately, by the time the total price of two mufflers and two tips is considered, I might as well buy a pre-made axle-back for only a little more. |

OP, they probably need to get a good look underneath the car to see what would need to be done. Make some time to take it there and get a quote. You can also get a feel for how the shop operates and if it's somewhere you'd want your car being worked on. Like POS VETT said though, it might just be better to get the pre-made axle back in the end as the price difference might be negligible.

I get it. I guess there are a few places that can do a decent job. I was referring based on previous experiences and the countless hack jobs I have seen.
So I stand incorrect to assume that any muffler shop is not capable of producing something acceptable to most enthusiast's standards.

I think the AAM are way over priced. I got a nice job done at a reputable local shop. $230 total. Two guys worked on it to get the symmetry right. double walled tips. I'm very happy.

I see reduced pipe diameter at the crush bends. Pipe material doesn't seem like stainless steel. I'll pay the minimal extra for the mandrel bends and the stainless steel used in AAM short tail.

That's why I purchased the materials for mine myself and had a friend do my welds since that isn't a skill or tool I possess. Plus he makes custom drag racing exhausts so I trust him. Lol I would have went AAM but with my FI exhaust there's no system that mates with it so I made my own.

I think you guys are over looking a key point. Short tails are for sound only. No real performance gains. If you want short tails, your mainly looking for a little sound over the stock hush. If your looking for real gains, then you put your money into a real exhaust system.
