I was just wondering if anyone has done their own installation of the 928 ceramic bearings? I assume they need to be pressed on. Should any competent shop be able to do it?

I would not recommend doing it! The original owner of my kit re-did the bearings himself and the first thing I had to do was get a minor rebuild (bearings and seals). It's expensive, but with things rotating that fast, the slightest mistake could lead to another rebuild, best case, or complete failure, worst case. I would want the peace of mind that someone knowledgeable did the work and will stand by it in the form of some kind of workmanship warranty. I feel mechanically savvy and I wouldn't do it myself.

I did my own rebuild using 928 HS bearings kit
you do need a press and a pulley and bearing puller they will need to press out the output shaft to release the assembly from the housing, will have to pull the bearings out and press back in, once bearings are all in place, take caution with returning the input/output shaft as they tempt to rotate because of the helical gears. use these instructions for guidance http://www.starrland.com/supercharge...%202-22-08.pdf things to look out for: make sure u place all the washers in their locations. be careful pulling the input shaft in attempt to separate from output shaft as the bearing will bend the oil slinger. when pressing the impeller back on, make sure u don't press it too far causing the seal to bulge which will leak air pressure in causing the blower to shoot oil out the vent gap. the link provided has some revisions at the bottom. read through the instructions multiple times, understand them and read them again (or have the shop read over them) good luck |

I did it myself, but sourced my own high speed bearings. NSK set, rated up to 63,000 RPM. Swapped them in myself along with a new Oil Slinger plate. Watched a few videos, did some reading and took it slow and carefully followed instructions I pieced from said material. End result was a substanial improvement in noise over before and just seemed smoother overall. Car has seen up to 7500 RPM a number of times over a few thousand Kms. No issues yet. If you keep bashing on it all day everyday, I reckon you'd break even a 928 re-built unit.
Single greatest piece of advice if you were to tackle it solo, would be to invest in some good small bearing puller tools. I borrowed a set. |
