Rotrex Oil Flow?
After doing some scheduled maintenance I discovered the oil flow seems very low. I pulled the return line off the cooler and it was spitting, not a steady flow, Car has been sitting for 4 weeks so I hope it just has some air trapped in the system. Anyone have any ideas on the amount the system should flow at idle?
Thanks

Do you have a thermostatic plate? What was the oil temp when you did your experiment? If the oil was "cold", the t-plate would be diverting most of the flow away from the cooler.

He's referring to the supercharger unit. Is there any type of internal oil filter in the loop? Maybe take a look at the pump.

Yes to the filter, only 8K miles, on it. Should not be the problem. I also checked all the lines. All looks good.

Going by my experience with pumps and piping in an industrial setting, it sounds like you are introducing air into the suction side of the pump. Not sure how your system is set up (obviously ) but check fluid level and any fittings/piping on suction side of pump.

We Will see. Also I let the car sit for 5 weeks as, I was out of town. I had some SC fluid leak from around the pump. Anyone else had issues with long store times and leaks? I just hope I an not getting a new SC for Xmas. Has anyone used any other fluid then Rotrex traction drive? I looks and smells line any of the rear differential syn fluids.

I have only used what they sell, I have had friends look and smell it and they same the same or similar thing. I did some digging and no one has a straight answer online on what makes it different or unique really.

When I had factory supercharged Pontiac Gran Prix, I asked why the s/c lube was soooo expensive. Something about being rated for high temps and not as likely to carbonize. But that's just what the dealer's counter guy told me.

I have always been suspicious of specialty lubricants ever since I needed a fluid change on my automatic transmission in my 540 BMW. The trans fluid cost, hold on to your seat, OVER $700 for a 4 liter bottle! This stuff must be made from unicorn sperm! The tranny fluid change was quoted at $1800. I sold the car......
I've seen other "specialty" fluids that were simply repackaged oil that was common. Regular old transmission fluid has been repackaged and sold as all sorts of automotive fix it stuff. We are at the mercy of what the vendors tell us and they charge what the market will bare. I guess it is up to us to either pay the price or take the risk and experiment to see if a lower cost lubricant will do the job. Otherwise send a sample to a lab for analysis and then mix up our own witches brew. I'm planning on purchasing the Stillen SC and the Vortech SC uses a special fluid too. At least it is reasonably priced when you buy a pack of three bottles. Last edited by TBatt; 12-22-2015 at 09:57 AM. |
