I'm trying to make some custom fabrication pieces to weld my roll cage in. Normally for tubes I know I should use 4130 chromoly (shown as PVC pipe in Picture).

Roll Cage Weld question
I'm trying to make some custom fabrication pieces to weld my roll cage in. Normally for tubes I know I should use 4130 chromoly (shown as PVC pipe in Picture).
For the rear tower I need to make some plates to weld to the body of the car. I believe the car body is Aluminum, can I fab some Aluminum plates and weld the 1.75" OD 4130 chromoly tube to it? |

Don't have to use chromoly. Use mild steel DOM. Cheaper and you don't gain that much weight. And no the car is not aluminium, its steel. Use 3/16th mild steel plate. I believe cold rolled is stronger.
Only thing aluminium is the hood, hatch, and doors. Just an FYI if you want price and weight and strength. Unless you get under 3k you need 1.75" x 0.120".

Car body is steel not aluminum ...so no special fabrication required. just use mild steel. Only doors, rear hatch and front hood are aluminum.

A quick way to check if its steel and wieldable is check it with a magnet. Also be careful with the heat settings, its very easy blowing thru the sheet metal used in the stampings.
Anything that is close by remove it or protect it with a wet rag, it amazing how fast heat travels and how much focus you don't have around you when wielding. Also disconnecting the battery ground is a good idea to prevent feed back to brain box. just My 2$ |
