What are the laws on removing the steering wheel airbag from a car?

Excellent question.
There are no laws that prevent the airbag removal from a car. There is regulation that automobile manufacturers have to adhere to to sell cars in the US... but we shouldn't get those confused with what applies to us as a consumer. I went through all of this on my Z32 it was a few years back. As a side note it turns out legally short people (5'4" and shorter if memory serves) actually should remove the airbag as they sit too close to the steering wheel for the airbag to be an effective safety device. As I recall it was recommended because the AB may cause more severe injury in the event of an accident. I read this some place when trying to figure this out with my 300ZX. Do not blame me however if you remove it and your insurance company blows up at you if you have a wreck and no airbag is there. Anyway don't want to be rude, but lets consider all the legal stuff not to be an issue. Just interested in what some other folks have done. I know some of you racing folks and some SEMA tuners have removed it. Can we see some pics?

I plan to go with a Sparco this summer. They really have several I like. But no, I haven't seen any 370's with them. Couldn't be much different from the 350.

i use a momo on my dd and have been using it since like 3yrs ago. ive had another momo in my G years ago as well. it's great to have these smaller diameter steering wheels for that tighter steering feel and to get the wheel in the proper position to fit your body.
on the dd the main reason i did it was i dont use cruise control, car didnt offer any stereo/bt control, and wasnt telescopic. so added spacers to get the wheel in a better position. im not too worried about not having an airbag on the steering wheel especially because 99% of the time i only use surface streets and speeds are under 50mph. |

I have had a Momo Race steering wheel in its box for close to 8 years because i thought the airbag law was in full effect even for consumers.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a legislative mandate under Title 49 of the United States Code, Chapter 301, Motor Vehicle Safety, to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Regulations to which manufacturers of motor vehicle and equipment items must conform and certify compliance. KenChen, any Pics? I don't use cruise control either. Why get a Z and use cruise, that takes the fun out? I also dont use the stereo. I have turned it on once since I have had the car... when My wife and I went out for our Anniversary. I would just assume take it out.. other than the gaping hole in the dash. My favorite part of the Z32 is that there were no cup holders. I am disappointed the Z34 has one. You want cupholders... get a minivan. anyway anyone with pics?

Hey.. Did the daikei or worksbell hub fit perfectly or did you have to make any adjustments? Want to change the steering wheel on my Z but I've heard of hubs not fitting well and having to make cuts.. I don't want to go through that..
