I also have this problem with my 2010 Roadster and have used the key fob port to start the car for years. I am very accustomed to putting the "key" in the "slot" to start the car that it feels quite normal.
I was told that the antenna located in the center console is the problem but I never felt the need to take it out and replace it. Hope this helps with your concerns, if it starts just drive it -

I placed both fobs inside the car then I disconnected the main battery ( positive first then negative ) let it sit for about 10-15 minutes then re-connected the battery ( negative first then of course the positive side ) this is suppose to re-program the fobs and so far so good They both seem to work as they should with no problems |

Does this method work on the originally programmed fobs only? will this work on a new one?

FWIW: I had the Same symptoms as you did. I replaced the batteries in both fobs, and still got no start.
But then I replaced the batteries again, and it worked fine. Turns out the "new" batteries I had purchased were old/discharged. I think it would be worth investing in another fresh battery, paying attention to the manufacture date. Also, make sure the contacts in your fob aren't corroded. |
