Which Wire(s) to use when adding electrical accessories?

I am in the process of installing an oil pressure gauge and the instructions are below. Just wanting to check I am wiring things safely? I'm wanting to tap in

Default Which Wire(s) to use when adding electrical accessories?

I am in the process of installing an oil pressure gauge and the instructions are below. Just wanting to check I am wiring things safely?

I'm wanting to tap in to the interior fuse box, using an add a circuit, and so far am thinking of:

Red wire & white wires --> wire in to "Cigar lighter" using add a circuit #1
Yellow wire --> wire in to "Stop Lamp" using add a circuit #2
Black wire --> to ground on chassis

Will these wiring choices work fine? Am I safe to add both the red and white wires in to a single add a circuit?

If you wire the yellow into your stop light, the wire will only be hot when you press the brake pedal. The diagram is asking you to wire into the parking lights, since those are separate from the headlights, and would provide a light when your running lights are on, but not your headlights. Your DRL's would be another option for a switched hot connection.

My car (2010) doesn't have DRLs. I'm also not familiar with the term "parking lights" as when my car is parked and off, there are no lights illuminated in the cabin or externally either?

What is a "parking light" exactly...?

It is the other setting on the stalk.
Off - Automatic - On - Parking.
Once upon a time, it was illegal to be in a parked vehicle without having some lights turned on. Since leaving the headlights on quickly ran down the battery, a compromise was the parking lights, which kept the tail lights and front marker lights on. They could also be used in daylight low-light conditions where headlights weren't required.

Perhaps its a regional thing then, as my car (Japanese import) doesn't have that option.

My light switch on the wheel has:

Off - Automatic - Small light on - Full headlight on

Parking lights = running lights = marker lights = the small lamps, usually on the corners of the car, that come on with the headlights. Can be white or yellow/amber. As per above, for visibility if the headlights go out.


You can use a headlight power wire or any other source that is hot when the dash lights are on.
