Mesh Grill Hole Sizes Air flow Restrictions
Yo Fellow Zs. Just have a question on whether adding a mesh grill, particularly one with a small hole size (ie 6mmx3mm) on our front bumper generates some form of air flow restriction and if so will it impact our cooling efficiencies? ie Radiator, Oil Cooler, Trans cooler, Power steering cooler etc.
Thinking of DIY'ing one for my OEM front bumper due to some stone chip damages on my brand new setrab oil cooler that I would hate to replace so early just because of a few rocks that dented it and causes oil leaks in the future. Worst case scenario ofcourse. What would be acceptable mesh grill hole sizes? On a side note does anyone have the Stillen front bumper? Looks like they come with pre-cut mesh that fits perfectly. Plus I really like the look. Heard some bad reviews on them though. Hopefully they're not true. |

It's not necessarily about the size of the hole so much as the surface area blocked by the space between holes. Any grill will affect air flow, but most should have minimal impact while driving. Unless you already have heating issues or are on the cusp of having them, you shouldn't need to worry. Expect IATs to increase at lower speeds.
I ran a couple of different grills for a few years without it noticeably affecting daily driving. One was just mesh from Home Depot; the other is the one shown below. I chose to remove them for my track build.

I have the factory Nismo RC grill screen. It lists for about $400.00 in the book. It's a stainless steel wire mesh that has about 3/8" spacing between the wires. Pictures are somewhere in my build thread.
You do not want any restrictions in air flow.

I don't have personal experiences, just have read others in track groups see a few degrees change in temps from just swapping mesh sizes on their cars. Based off that, I expect the impact to be considerable going from no mesh to fine mesh. If you're willing to take the time, there are a lot of resources online going through pressure drop due to mesh you can use for reference.
If not tracking the car, I guess you'd be ok.

I don't have the new catalog. The one I have is 2 yrs old. Didn't go to ZdayZ last year to get one.
Found these. They look like the one I have. The pictures are upside down. https://www.google.com/search?q=370z...4dUDCAk&uact=5
