Rear tow hook
I always assumed looking at the square cutout above the fog light that we have a mount for a rear tow hook. I popped the cover and discovered what many here already know... That there are no threads for the tow hook.
Im wondering if it can simply be tapped for the hook. I've read a few of the threads about it and everyone says weld it, then tap it. What exactly does that mean? Is the rear crash bar not strong enough on its own to be tapped as-is? I can tap a hole but I can't weld. |

I'm really just wondering if I can tap threads into the rear crash bar without having to do anything first. |

I don't think the crash bar is thick enough to drill and tap to use as a tow point. Believe you have to weld a plate to the crash bar to make it thick enough. You wouldn't have enough threads to hold any pulling. The other thing you can do. Is to drill all the way through the crash bar. Think there is an inner web of material in it. So basically you would be drilling 3 holes. Once drilled. Put the tow hook all the way through. Use a large washer or plate on the end, then install your nut on the end.

You have to drill through 3 layers. You have the outside, an internal web, and the side facing the body.
