I'm sure many people have done this, but I'll share my experience. I actually posted this in a different thread the other day. To make a long story short: I had a relatively cheap plug-in charger. Something shorted out inside of it and it got hot enough to melt shell, and I could smell it. I was lucky that nothing was plugged in to it, and that I was in the car when it happened. I used to leave them plugged in even when I wasn't in the car, but I can't trust them anymore. In all honestly I probably just got a defective unit, but it was enough to scare me away. YMMV

If you aren't needing to pass data, just get something that fits in the 12V outlet. They make them pretty small to where it looks good.

I did turn the one below the glove box into a USB port for Android Auto on my headunit. That way I could swap cables easily if I ever needed to, or just have no cable. I used this guy https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NAMU8KY/ It's worked great for about half a year now.

The USB connectors are standardized.

The power connectors (the blue crimp-on connectors in your pic) are standardized for non-automotive purposes. You will probably have to cut the harness connector* and install the blue connectors. Not sure how ground is handled but you can use just about any metal brace in the dash.

*This will only have power when car is in ACC or RUN modes. Will need to get power from elsewhere if you want power all the time.

I added one of these between the seat heater switches. Pulled the power from lighter and ran directly to USB charger. I like it there, can run cable directly to armrest where the phone is stored. I wish I would have gotten the one with the volt meter, but, who needs that? Found on eBay or Amazon, I forget.
