Engine Light Came on. (help)
Today I was driving back from the beach and the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. I have a tablet installed in my car, with OBDII and Torque. Torque error code says P0420 - power train. Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank1). I looked it up and it sounds like I need a new catalyst converter?
My car is a 2012 Nissan 370z, Automatic. Only 22k miles, bought it brand new. I got 6 year bumper to bumper on the car warranty. But basically I'm wondering if it turns out to be a catalyst converter, would I have any warranty for it? Sounds like it would cost like $800 bucks after doing some looking up online. I'll call Ferman Nissan Tampa(where I bought it from) in the morning. But I'd like to know if this is even covered under warranty, and if this is the problem according to the error code and IF it will cost that much? Thanks guys! |

I dont see any reason why your warranty wont cover a replacement.
If the dealershit gives you a round around you can buy a used catalytic over the for sale section for $150. I think i even saw one forum member giving it away in exchange for a can of beer! Otherwise if you do have the money might as well upgrade with a HFC if you intend to move ahead changing your exhaust to FI or ARk. |

Try this first and see if this clears up the ECU:
Easy Way to Reset ECU without battery disconnect in G37 - YouTube Nissan/Infiniti's in general trip the CEL more than any other brand I own. Most of the time in my experiance there is no issues, just need a reset. If your cat is bad I would go with Berk HFC's, probably the best mod I have done to date. Good Luck, Sterling

I find it unlikely that you'd need a new catalytic converter after only a couple of years, unless it was physically damaged. Check engine lights can mean a lot of things: O2 sensor malfunction; MAF malfunction; loose gas cap etc.
Regardless, it should be covered under warranty. Last edited by wanker; 06-22-2014 at 11:15 PM. |

If you live in the U.S. then your car has a 8 year 80k mile emission warranty where if any emission component fails or causes other components to fail, the manufacturer will replace it for free within the 8 year/80k mile

I literally just had this issue earlier this week. I believe it was because of a loose gas cap or some other minor thing along those lines. I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes and the light has been gone ever since. (If it comes back on there is a problem.) I also tried the reset using the accelerator but I couldn't get that to work..

Well, it turned out to be a bad cat. Like you all said. It was completely covered under warranty. I hadn't got an engine light until last week after my reset. Took it in to the Nissan dealership, and they confirmed a bad cat and ordered parts.
