Default Oil Consumption

Hello All,

MY engine is now at 3400k miles. I have had one oil change. When I start the car it smells and looks like she is burning oil. After it warms up though this smell goes away. I know these engines seem to burn oil anyone else experience this? I check my oil every fill up and the level neve rseems to go down any noticable amount to me.

You might still be smelling some break in smells on the car such as the cats. Also you might have something stuck to the exhaust possibly. 2012s don't burn oil (or atleast they shouldn't).

i just got a 2012 also. 2050 miles, i check often, and it hasnt burned a drop. keep checking, make sure you are checking correctly, and pay attention to oil temp. you probably have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the responses. Yea like I said checking the dip stick the oil level seems rock solid. I'll keep checking it though and make sure that remains the case.

Does it smell like oil, or more like hot plastic? I have an issue where if the car sits over night, when I start it the next morning with AC off, within a few seconds I get a strong plastic smell, which goes away quickly. I'm pretty sure it is coming from under the hood, but I don't see anything touching exhaust or anything. Wierd. I don't smell it with AC on but I think that is because it is recirculating.

yes i get this burning rubber/plastic smell every couple of days, i cant track it down. mechanic just looks at me and starts drooling because he knows he can replace 3000$ worth of parts and still not solve the problem.

my car smelled burning oil when new. what i did was fill oil only to 3/4 full on dipstick. that took care of the burning. it seemed any time i filled it up to the full dot, the smell came back.

after about 8K miles or so it stopped doing this and no more burning of oil either. i fill to the top dot these days and i am at about 12K miles.

also check if there's oil under the pan. some folks do a sloppy job on their oil changes, and that can also burn while engine is hot.
