Motor burning oil like a DE
So I have an 2009 370z 6mt, car burns oil like my infiniti with a DE, like a quart every 1500 miles normal driving, or even 1 quart every 1000 miles with spirited driving mixed in. I read through the forums that my model year was known to have pretty bad oil consumption issues due to manufacturing defects either with the piston rings or valve stem seals.
On the dyno its obvious its burning oil, blue smoke followed after hitting redline. Also just changed the valve cover gaskets, and replaced all the gaskets associated with removing the front engine cover. I also installed a 19 Row Oil cooler when I bought the car, and I do not see any visible leaks when parked. The thing is, if I am consistent with checking oil level and topping off, should I just be fine? The car made decent power on the dyno (FBO, 326whp on a low reading dyno at 114 Fahrenheit Ambient), so I am perfectly happy with the performance. |

That is very odd. I have the same year 2009, 6mt, and I literally have no loss from year to year. Granted, I do only 3000 miles a year, but I go for track days, but still I don't need to top up any oil from change to change.
I wanted to suggest either gaskets or oil cooler, but as you have both OK, then I have no idea. How did you achieve that whp though? Any other mods you got? |

Its basically FBO on 93, so ISR Longtube Headers RZG 3in Intakes Ported Upper and Lower Intakes (done by local fabricator) Custom xpipe Exhaust (2 3/8 tubing) Got tuned by Martin aka Rs-Enthalpy at z-fever. Apparenty from the conditions that day he was only expecting me to make 310-320whp If anything, my friend gave me his Fast Intentions TDX 2.5in exhaust recently, so if I ever get bored with the power I can install that to free up some HP Dont seem to be leaking anything from the oil cooler fittings or lines either. The only thing I can imagine might leaking is the rear main seal, but I haven't seen residue leaking on the ground near the transmission bellhousing I also currently have a PCV delete that only vents to atmosphere. My next steps will probably be: Installing baffled oil catch can and monitoring the amount of oil in the reservoir Doing a compression test on all the cylinders Last edited by Grotiare; 09-13-2023 at 01:18 PM. |

My 2014 had some oil burn, not nearly as bad but I'd have to throw in about a quart every 2-3k miles. When I blew up the engine (unrelated! lol) and took it apart for disassembly I had one exhaust valve that was completely coated in oil compared to the rest.

My 2011 burns about the same as yours, 1 quart every 1k miles with spirited driving, or roughly 1500 miles with normal driving.
I bought the car 5 years ago with 60k miles and it's been burning the same amount since day 1. I just check the oil every 500 miles or so and top it off. |
