Default Gallery Gaskets replacement? Help

So my Z had been sitting for about 6 months, waiting to get the Cmak installed (couldnt start my car, long story)

I took it to Soho motorsports and they said when they turned it on it sounded like it was trying to get oil in her for around 10 seconds. After they checked oil pressure, air flow, etc and everything checked out.

They suggested getting a Gallery Gasket replacement just because they dont know if any oil leaked when they first started the car, and are quoting me $4,600.

I drove it back home for 2 hours and she felt good. 2011 53,000 miles.

I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. Any advice would help

$4600 for gallery gaskets?!?!? WTF Soho???

I had my gallery gaskets done along with a ton of other work at the same time, including clutch and fuel system work and it didn't cost near that amount.

Miles are low enough I'd be less concerned, but the age is getting there. For peace of mind, I would just replace them (find another shop) with the EPS kit. Alternatively, you can get an oil pressure gauge and see how things look at cold start, idle, WOT, etc. This data can provide you with a reasonable gauge on how well the stock gaskets are holding up.

Yep.......put an oil pressure gauge on it before you do anything else. This way, you know for sure. The gauge sure read up to 150 psi.

The price for the gasket replacement is a joke. For a reputable shop that's appx 6-7h of work. So even if they charge $200 per hour, that's not nearly as much as they quoted you.

What the above already suggested - get a pressure gauge, it's good to have it regardless of your gaskets, and with it you'll always know exactly where you're at - if there's reason to worry or not.

I'm not gunna lie...I think it's a meaningless precaution. The percentage of gallery gaskets that really go bad is so exceedingly low. For 5k I'd just buy a newer engine and jave it replaced for that price they quoted you.

Catastrophic failure numbers are indeed low. Partly because it would be very difficult to trace the cause of failure back to the gallery gaskets. But oil pressure is an important variable in an engine and low oil pressure can lead to other problems. The gaskets tend to blow out at different spots over time so it's one of those things that can build up to a bad situation in the end.

I can tell you that when I pulled my timing cover (at 100K miles), both gaskets were blown out in multiple locations and we found bits of the gaskets in the oil pan as well. Others that have done the same work have found similar conditions upon timing cover removal.

He should start by getting a realistic quote. 5k is just idiotic.
Realistically, I do agree with you regarding the percentage of failures. Probably the gaskets don't blow out THAT easily, but regardless, it's a good peace of mind to have the oil pressure gauge. If nothing goes wrong - it was a cheap upgrade and you know everything's OK. If something does go wrong - you'll immediately know and you can prevent catastrophic failures.

I have nothing extra to add other than do the pressure gauge first. It's nice to have that piece of mind knowing what's going on. I have a box full of parts for the front of my motor in my garage but none are getting installed until it's time. Oil pressure is still good at 147K.

Were you having symptoms that caused the inspection or did you just happen upon the GG damage?

100k here on my 2010 and spec. oil pressure so I figure no issue.

I had a variety of parts to install, including oil pump gears. Made sense to do the gallery gaskets (along with thermostat, water pump, etc) as preventative maintenance while the car was down. Plus once the timing cover was off, it was clear the gaskets had been compromised.

I live in Charlotte and was quoted $6500 by Soho just last month! They wanted to do an alignment FFS! Totally bogus! They quoted me a used '14 engine for $8200 that had 70k miles!! I ended up buying the parts and doing it myself. They wanted $900 to just INSTALL an exhaust!!! WTFE Soho! I did it for my friend for $300!

So there is the problem. I had brick wall at either 2500 or 3500 and CEL. The codes were P0021 and P0524. I replaced the solenoid on bank 2, then pressure switch AFTER I removed to perform the pressure test at operating temp. I get 11-12psi idle and 50psi+at 2000rpm. I replaced the pressure switch (not like that had anything to do with it but I got one) and it still sends codes. So I purchased all the stuff to do the chain, water pump, and gaskets. Replaced all that and found the gasket popped out in the gunsight area with lose screws nearby. I figured that was the problem. After reassembly, on occasion I still get a brick wall at 25 or 3500! I reset the codes and it still comes up pending then CEL. Could I have a bad VVT solenoid? I am going to get a sandwich block and oil sending unit/gage now.

Of note, when I was replacing the 6 oil washers I could only find 5 (later found the 6th after cleaning up) and that was all I could install. I do not know which side I reused the oil washer. Surely that could not be the issue!?! I am not opposed to taking off the VVT covers and replacing them again just DON'T want to do the whole timing cover again!!!

2010 G37x 251,000 miles.
