Default RHD Japan Fuel Starvation Solution ?

Hi guys,

Posting this query as like many of you, I face the same annoying fuel starvation issues on my stock 370Z which for me happens even on a 2/3 full tank on twisty mountain roads and tight right handers.

I’ve looked thru with writeups on the CJM RRP, Radium Fuel Hanger Surge Tank and the Z1/Holley solution when I came across this solution at RHD Japan and was wondering if anyone has any experience this solution or something similar?

I can understand the basics of how this is supposed to work, but could not get any installation instructions form RHD (unless you buy it first).

My main questions on this are :

1. do you think this would work ?
2. how the heck do you get this in the tank ? (seems like a tight fit just for the OEM fuel pump assembly)

thanks guys, appreciate your feedback !

Unhappy

From the looks of it. You have to build it in the tank. Hope you have very small hands.

The CJM kit works - go with something that has runs on the board rather than be a test pilot

I don’t think they make the CJM RRP anymore though

Charles has a v2 (or it'll be available soon), although I don't believe it's advertised on the site just yet. If you contact him, he should be able to sort you out.

I thought CJM also recommended the Radium setup

I would not recommend the z1 kit, way too much a PITA and also can be loud. Any of the kits that require you to do work in the tank and then attach the pump etc are going to be a major pain. I tried the cheap route with the z1 kit and quickly regretted it only to end up buying the radium kit right after. The radium kit has worked very well for me just make sure you have a friend to help you with the hoses.

I have only recommended that people get what they can that will work for them, rather than being mad at me for how long they may wind up waiting for my new products to release The radium kit is OK, its basically a spin-off of the original CJM RRP that came out 9 years ago, so I cant pretend its terrible.

They added an adjustable regulator and switched to external tank hoses (which I think is definitely the way to go at this point in the vehicles timeline and what my new kit does). What I would say they really botched though is defeating the fuel filter. The way their kit installs, the original fuel filter is no longer inline between the pump(s) and engine. They switch it to be more like a separate circulation filter system (think of a pool filter for the tank), and there is no longer any filtration to protect the fuel injectors from dirt/sediment etc in the fuel tank that is able to pass through the typical fuel pump strainer.

The Gen2 RRP is in final stages, only having some last minute delays since I am in the middle of moving. But most of the parts for it have already finished production, just 1 piece left.

1: I am sure it would work pretty well. But they really could have made this much nicer without any more work. Its build is lacking in features. I worry about it in higher HP cars, where it looks like it will block fuel from getting to the pump equally as well as it keeps fuel around the pump. It needs to have one way valves all around it so that fuel can get in easier. You could probably modify it though, to make it far better than it is in these pictures, quite easily. I have one-way doors and valves that would be pretty simple to attach to that sheet metal. You will want my billet top hat for that 100%, the extra weight of that stainless and all the fuel it can hold inside will no doubt break the stock plastic hat in short order.

2: This would definitely be placed into the tank in pieces, and assembled there. I have 3-4 prototypes of extremely similar ideas I played with over the years but never released (such as misc scrap left over that I just pulled out of my desk and attached in photo). My end conclusion with this type of product, was that I wound up feeling like it was silly to make this a flimsy drop-in unit; I would rather just drop the fuel tank from the car, cut the floor off the right side of the tank, weld in the proper baffles and one-way doors, then weld the floor back into the tank, and paint it black. Then all problems are solved at the root, and you can just run normal stock fuel pump assembly.

Folks

A short update on this.

I installed this about 5 months ago together with the CJM top hat upgrade as my OEM top hat was already found broken at both hangers when removed. Since then I've been on spirited drives around twisty roads with the fuel tank down to 1 dot and 2 track days with the fuel at about 1/4 tank or less with no issues.

I didn't install it myself but was told it's a bit of a tricky install as you have to put it together in the tank itself but it's do-able with some patience. Having said that, the thing itself is just 3 pieces that screw together and a 4th piece that drops in and acts as a wedge between the fuel collector box and OEM fuel pump basket.

Just to note, mine's still an NA engine so not sure if this'll work in higher HP builds.

Cheers
